B.C. vets seek ban on cropping dogs' ears

Sleek cropped ears may soon be a thing of the past on Dobermans and other breeds if B.C. veterinarians follow Manitoba's lead and ban the practice.

Detractors say the procedure is merely cosmetic, and causes unnecessary pain to canines, who have no say in the matter. Similar bans have been enacted in Newfoundland and Labrador, and many European countries.

Cherie Holmes, president of the Doberman Pinscher Club of Canada, said the procedure is not just a cosmetic indulgence, but contributes to the health and functionality of dogs' ears.

"All wild dogs have pricked, standup ears because it gives better air flow, the ears can pivot and catch the sound and do their job."

I wouldn’t want to do it to my dogs.

Don’t crop the ears but they’ll sell you a $2,000 MRI for yer dogs ear ache.

My parents had a Doberman with cropped ears. The surgery really wasn’t a big deal. Dobies “true” ears tend to hand down and they can have issues with mites/infection. Our Dobie (after the surgery) never had an ear infection or any other problem. IMHO, a Dobie looks far more regal with the ears done and their tails cropped.

Well by all means let's give dogs the vote. We have gay 'marriage,' why not canine suffrage? No doubt PETA would be on board. Occupy Animal Hospitals!

Similar bans have been enacted in Newfoundland and Labrador, and many European countries.

Ah those forward-thinking European countries. Are those the same ones now breathing through a fiscal reed as their welfare states plunge farther into the ocean of red ink? My but they are clever.

A blogger somewhere has termed stories - and the logical fallacies they rely on such as the Appeal To Majority as demonstrated here - as 'churnalism.' It's a perfect word to describe the lazy, one-sided writing that fails to deliver news without delivering a sermon.

If you did ask your dog, he would probably say, “Yes master!” because a dog views his owner as a god. After all, if your God asked you to...ummm....clip the foreskin off your penis, you’d do it, right?

Animal rights people always claim to speak for the animals, but they assign human motivations to the animal first. They claim that this is mutilation, but then demand spaying and neutering because that is convenient to THEM. No one asks the dog or cat? (And I think spaying and neutering is a MUST!)

And if a government is going to outlaw ear modification for dogs, then does that government employ any police dogs?? Who asked the dog if he wants to go in harm’s way, ride around in the police car all day, risk injury chasing 200 pound criminals, etc?

I agree with you...plus with uncropped ears Dobies look like Labs - who are very cute but not Dobermans, who are Handsome!. I’ve had 2 and can’t imagine having another breed.

More buttinsky $%#& from the left. They just can’t keep out of people’s business.

and that’s the same reason their tails are docked. They were bred to be working guard dogs - a purpose beyond the understanding of sissified do-gooders around the world.

We certainly wouldn't want to allow any of our animal citizens to feel unnecessary pain.

Of course, aborted human babies feel excruciating pain and don't have any say in the matter when they are ripped into pieces in their mothers' wombs, but unborn human babies have far less rights than animals in the Obamanation.

Some breeds normally cropped look fine and do well without a crop. Great Danes for example. Dobies look like derelict black and tan cooh hounds. Absolutely ruins the look, plus the ear problems with big floppy ears. I’m so sick of these do gooders.

I have found the same people who object to ear and tail cropping, support getting a dog neutered or spayed. Both are for health reason IMHO. Our Dobie also had his dew-claws (sp?) removed. I’ve had dogs with them removed and without... far better for the dog (and me trimming the nails) when that pesky weird nail is done. As usual... it is all about control.

I have a Doberman... She has the ears and tail the Good Lord gave her. I have been a dog owner my whole life with three of ‘em now. This one is special.

What about human piercings? Isn’t that mutilation on a wholesale level?

Yes. Let’s vote to ban surgical abortion procedures... then we can ‘talk’ about banning the cropping of dogs’ ears and the docking of their tails. Sounds completely reasonable to me!

Tail docking is also banned in some of the EU. I showed a dock tail breed (in the US and I know there has been talk about it here as well. I suspect it will eventually happen.
