Deputy killed Marine to protect the man's daughters, official says
The Los Angeles Time ^ | February 11, 2012 | By Nicole Santa Cruz, Los Angeles Times

A veteran Orange County sheriff's deputy feared for the safety of two young girls sitting in a parked car when he shot and killed a Marine sergeant in a dark high school parking lot, authorities said Friday.

Sgt. Manuel Loggins Jr. was shot Tuesday as he started to get into the SUV where his two daughters — ages 9 and 14 — were sitting, authorities said.

Jim Amormino, a spokesman for the Sheriff's Department, said the deputy was fearful that Loggins — who he said appeared to be acting irrationally — was about the drive off with the girls.

"The real threat that was perceived was the safety of the children," Amormino said.

"The deputy formed an opinion that he had a deep concern for the children, that he would not allow Mr. Loggins to drive away with the kids," Amormino said.

A former commanding officer said Loggins routinely went to the school during the early morning with his daughters to walk the track and read the Bible.

Amormino said that Loggins was not armed and that the incident doesn't appear to be alcohol- or drug-related.

About 4:30 a.m. on the day of the shooting, the deputy was doing paperwork inside his car near San Clemente High School when he said he saw Loggins driving a white Yukon at an "unsafe, high rate of speed" into the school parking lot, Amormino said.

They had a whole week to get their stories together and this cockamany story is the best they could come up with?

We shot a marine father to protect him from his kids? By shooting into the car with them?

“The real threat that was perceived”

WTF?
Is this new cop double-speak?

The SUV, according to Amormino, crashed through a locked gate and the deputy pulled in behind him.

From the picture on the webpage at the link; that SUV does not look like a car that crashed through a locked gate.

Amormino said that Loggins made statements to the deputy before he was shot. He would not elaborate.

Sgt. James Chavis, 28, who also served with Loggins in Hawaii, said he was equally surprised.

"Manny was not one of those people who disobeyed commands," he said.

There's a whole lot of coverup going on here.

I'd also rate the LEO's story a solid "10+" on the "BS scale" but I wouldn't exclude "BS" from more than one source (plaintiff's counsel?). I can count the number of times I've gotten my daughter up at 4AM to "walk the track and read the Bible" or even "go for a morning jog on the beach" on .... well, on no hands. I have never done that. Maybe the left coast rises particularly early to do things, and my understanding of California culture is minuscule-to-none, so of course I could be mistaken.

Getting my kid up at 4AM EST would be a project rivaling moving Mt. Everest to the American Museum of Natural History in Manhattan. In one piece. It would never happen. Something is very, very strange about this incident.

My kids didn't know there was a 4AM EST until they were old enough to stay up that late. They didn't ever get up that early Christmas morning.

Something smells about this story. I don’t believe a word of it. This was a school, are there no security cameras there? Let’s go to the tape...

Our kids wake themselves between 0430 and 0500 so they can be done with their schoolwork by breakfast. When living in So Cal, it was a beautiful time for us to go to the ocean - it is the only thing they miss about California.

No, it doesn’t wrecked at all. You’d think with those plastic bumpers they put on SUVs now that it would at least look dinged up.

Not the only time that a LEO has lied to protect his ass after he smokes someone.

Five other cops showed up. They lost sight of Loggins. They didn’t bother to block his car. They didn’t check on the kids, or talk to them. They made no effort to remove them from the car.

Yet the deputy said to himself, “I have an opinion that I have a deep concern for the (kids).” No statement on the conduct or reaction of the kids at the time.

Deep concern replaces using deadly force to prevent the death or great bodily harm to an innocent?

And he fired into the car, where the cops had apparently decided that they didn’t have an opinion that they had a deep concern for the kids.

Six cops, one “suspect.”

So he supposedly drove through a locked gate, obviously into the track?

The officer was afraid he wuld drive off. Where? Onto the track? If they blocked the entrance how was he going to drive off?

“Something is very, very strange about this incident.”

Yeah, because right now it looks like the cops saw a black guy and shot him down.

Sorry, but the story they give makes LESS sense than that.

I mean, they had how many cops there and they did not attempt to subdue the guy they just SHOT him and not just shot him, but killed him?

WTF is the only reaction I have to this.

Is this how good police work is done today....get “a feeling” and then go murder the citizen?

The investigation into such killings needs to be done by outside non-law enforcement related organizations that have a vested interest in protecting the citizens, and getting to the truth....not covering up for murder.
