I hate to be a naysayer, but I say nay. I can't stand the "urban yodeling" of our national anthem that's become the expectation since Whitney Houston so famously did it in '91. I like to hear people sing it the way it's supposed to be sung, without the yodeling. It's beautiful and moving enough, and all the modern embellishments add nothing to it.

That said, RIP Whitney.

Even if I didn’t know that she recorded that track in LA prior to the Super Bowl, take a look at her turning her head way from the mic. The volume never fluctuated. That’s a clear sign that she wasn’t singing live.

Whitney must have some serious talent to be able to turn her head away from the mic and keep her vocal volume the exact same. She very well could have been singing, but that voice heard over the PA was recorded.

This is not a secret that she didn't sing that song live.

That does not throw water at all in my opinion. That is pretty common procedure at events as large as the SuperBowl.

But it is undoubtedly the most revered and popular version of our national anthem in our nation's history and is the only time a release of one made the Top 20 Billboard. This one did twice (once in 1991 and again after 9/11).

She was definitely peaking when she did this song - and she one of the most talented singers off all time. Noone can take that away from her.

She had a wonderful voice, but I am annoyed every time I hear her version of the SSB. The song was written in 3/4 and that is how it ought to be sung. I don’t mind the embellishments, but hearing it sung in 4/4 just bugs me.

I can get past the so called “yodeling” because IMHO she had one of if not the most beautiful and powerful voices on the planet! I think the yodeling comes from her church beginnings.
