"Were you lying then, or are you lying now?"
Free Republic Exclusive | February 13, 2012 | Lancey Howard

On Friday, Ann Coulter turned up on Medved's radio show to talk about Mitt Romney. During the interview Coulter claimed that conservatives aren't going for Mitt because he's "too square". Coulter has not only jumped the shark by endorsing Romney in the first place, she's gone stupid.

Conservatives don't like Romney for one obvious, glaring reason: he can't be trusted.

Ann (along with many other Romney supporters) has become expert at providing lame excuses and explanations for Romney's past proclamations that he was "more gay-friendly" than Teddy Kennedy, has "always supported a woman's right to choose", and "doesn't want to go back to Reagan". Mitt once actually called HIMSELF a "moderate". Most of the excuses amount to, "He was running for Senator (or later, Governor) of liberal Massachusetts! He HAD to say those things to get elected!" Okay. Unfortunately for Coulter and the rest of the excuse-makers, most conservatives have seen enough TV cop shows to know that if Romney was in court and on the stand, the first thing any competent lawyer would do is lean into Mitt's face, stare him in the eye, and ask sternly, "Were you lying then, or are you lying now?"

And it is a perfectly valid question.

If Mitt "only said those things because he was running for election in a liberal state", then why shouldn't it be presumed that what he is saying NOW he is saying only because he is running for the GOP nomination?

Bottom line: conservatives are not rejecting Romney because he's "too square"; conservatives are rejecting Romney because they do not trust him. He is viewed by many, if not most, conservatives as a pandering political whore who will say whatever he thinks his audience wants to hear. There is simply no evidence that Romney has core convictions.

Add to this "trust factor" the many other problematic aspects of a Romney candidacy - - his reputation as the architect of Obamacare, the inevitable media portrayal of Bain Capital's Romney as "Chainsaw Mitt", and the numerous mind-numbing flip-flops of the kind that made a laughingstock of John Kerry's campaign - - and Romney becomes just another "hold your nose" GOP candidate who can never be expected to generate the kind of passion among the electorate that is necessary to dump an incumbent President, even one as destructive and corrupt as Obama.

Romney cannot win depending primarily on the "dump Obama" vote. And you can absolutely count on the Democrats joining in on the chorus: "Were you lying then, Governor Romney, or are you lying now?"

Okay, when Romney has a 20 year record of being a clear voice in defense of conservatism then I’ll believe his conversion as sincere.

Reagan’s conversion was complete long, long, long before he sought the presidency. Romney’s conversion only came about once he started running for president.

And McNamara, wasn’t running for anything when he went Looney, he was just following the rest of his party which went from staunch anti-commie, to pro commie.

Who needs to judge Romney’s past? For me you simply cannot be conservative and be for a minimum wage, let alone indexing it.

Also, if your tax policy draws a line at $200,000, you have thrown tax REFORM out the window.

I am not going for Romney because #1 he is Not a conservative; #2 IF he is a man of convictions -his convictions seem at odds with his professed Mormon faith. # 3 he has a record of making bad mistakes for political gain. i.e. Romney Care; same sex marriage; abortion; 2nd Amendment rights; liberal judges—etc.
If I wanted to vote for Obama in Nov. I would vote for Obama And not just change the name of the mere politician. If I wanted the Democratic Party— and the already captured Media elite to dictate who America can vote for I would go for Romney because they have already selected Romney -just like they did Obama.

I've asked one guy I know who came out in support for Mitt romney a simple question - please name the achievement you admire him for the most while he was governor of MA. This is the only true litmus test we have of him as a leader, so there must be something there that you find particularly good.

He vacillated briefly and then launched into what romney did for the olympics. I explained I discard that effort entirely as that was not my question - what did he do, when in power, that you found particularly effective that makes you believe he would be a worthy leader.

Would you believe he said "romneycare"?

Destroying his argument piece by piece from there was child's play. He is still very PO'd with me. I went into detail about how romney destroyed MA's economy, his liberal record and other disasters tied to romney forever.

He should be embarrassed...a grown man embracing such idiocy is disgusting. OTOH, he has not brought romney up again. I will jump on him the second he does, facts are difficult things to overcome.

If you are advocating romney having destroyed his chances because he’s a weak sister, you should be ashamed of yourself.

Romney is one of those Liberals who honestly thinks they are a Conservative.

You know the type. Good Christians or Jews, with successful careers, nice families, & just generally nice, respectable people. Many are quite "conservative" in their daily lives.

But they also have a streak of Nanny running the length of their bodies. They are busy bodies, never content to mind their own business. Every problem is new, requiring new law. Individual problems are public problems. Gov't knows best. Gov’t is always the answer.

The Republicans need to get it right this time.

Yes but these are your choices:
Manager Mitt
Saint Rick
Think tank Newt
Crazy Uncle Ron
With this lineup I am afraid too many folks are going to say None of the Above come November.
