Some of these people are professional breeders and/or trainers. While I have no doubt that they love their dogs, this is as much a trade show as it is a competition. Much like with racing horses, placing well or winning enhances the marketability of their stud fees or pups.

Some others are just hobbyists, so going to Westminster is no different than a scuba aficionado who saves up for an annual trip to the barrier reef or the carribean, or an aviation enthusiast who puts money away every year to go to Oshkosh.

Being somewhat envious of Barry Soetorobama winning the Nobel Peace Prize, Michelle Robinsobama will win best in show.

Beautiful...Always partial to the Cockers. My first dog, parents bought it for me when I was a toddler, was a caramel. My grandma had a chocolate. Cocoa....She sang with grandma. Loved those dogs.

I'm also inclined a bit more to function over form, and given my druthers, would personally rather watch a schutzhund trial rather than a more typical dog show.

Having said that, I still enjoy watching the parade of breeds, and have a lot of respect for the conformation breeders.

It is very interesting how judging works. The dog that won Eukanuba Championship (2nd after Westminister in the USA in prestige), a Black Standard Poodle nicknamed London (Ch Jasset’s Satisfaction) was only BOS in the Standard Poodle competition. In the Non-Sporting group, where Standard Poodles compete, the winning Standard Poodle (a female) wasn’t a group finalist. Non-Sporting was won by a Dalmatian, which I am sure pleases most fire departments around the country... But disappoints us Standard Poodle fans

I stopped watching when I figured out that Llasas were never going to win.

If you're watching the people, the concept of Dog show has escaped your grasp.

Some people don't understand that there is an AKC standard that documents in meticulous detail the ideal of how each breed looks, moves, and behaves. Some people don't understand that each champion we see at Westminster is the product of a rigorous breeding program taking place over sometimes dozens of generations, genetically documented back sometimes many decades, undertaken by dedicated breeders who study (and understand!) genetics. Some people don't understand that each judge we see presiding over the breed evaluations and determining the winners and losers has extensive, usually multi-generational, knowledge of all the breeds which he/she is licensed by the AKC to judge, and has the history, certifications and test results to prove their competence.

Yes, as with any sport, there are politics involved. Still, it's the best method we have to evaluate and judge the success of the breeding programs that produced these dogs, and whether or not each breeding program is on-track to continue producing even better, more sound examples of the individual breeds.

Besides that, the dogs are cute. Every single one of them. And anyone who doesn't think so is a doody head. Beyond that, anyone who thinks watching this is stupid, and takes the time out of their day to come onto this thread and insult dozens of total strangers about something of which he/she is totally ignorant is a moron.

well shown.. He got out of the way so her beautiful red coat contrasted against the green carpet. The person who showed the GS did the same thing last night.

Funny how the criteria for judging other animals: pigs, dairy cows are all about the same.

Oh, I agree, but if I watch the dog, I can pretty well imagine what a running dog looks like. Looking at an usually overweight owner wearing a tux or a evening gown, trying to look good running next to a dog completely escapes me. Maybe they should judge the person and not the dog.

Or...just what you said, only much more politely than I just did.

Apologies for unnecessary ranting on such a pleasant and enjoyable thread.

“Eukanuba Championship (2nd after Westminister in the USA in prestige)”

Are you really serious? This show didn’t exist 20 years ago, when I was more into dogs. Now they call it a “National Champ.” which doesn’t even make any sense in the AKC - there is no such thing as a single show which confers “National Champion” on any dog. That always struck me as weird. Seems to me they created this thing just for TV - no? If so, it seems to me that’s the main reason it would have any prestige.

Good advertisement for dog food company. Good information for potential dog owners. My sis and her kids who own at least six different breeds have a family reunion at each of the televised events...Good family fun.
