Each dog, one after another, they are just beautiful.

My dogs are watching with me, chocolate lady lab and solid black 150 lb lab guy don't seem to care.

My tom kitty has decided to help me type...He doesn’t seem to be interested in the dogs, but loves to attack my hands as I type.

That’s one mistake I didn’t catch.
Love the ears on the Dane.

Great Dane and “pink lady” make for a great combo

That’s Jimmy Moses showing the German Shepherd, just as he was the prime handler for Manhattan when he won. Actually, lately, I’ve hardly seen anyone else handling the Group GS in many years.

She did a good job of showing the dogs attributes...How much of the final decision is based on showmanship?

So many beautiful dogs. This group could be difficult to choose top dog.

Doesn’t she. She’s comfortable with the big dogs and kind to dog and human.

“if I watch the dog, I can pretty well imagine what a running dog looks like.”

I don’t understand what you’re complaining about. You need to see the animal in motion, to ensure it works well (and even that can be deceptive). Believe me, an animal can look nice standing still, then you see him fall apart when he starts moving. You can’t “imagine” - there’s perception, then there’s reality. For an opposite example, early on people thought Secretariat did not have very good conformation (don’t believe what you see on-line - that’s AFTER the fact reporting when people change their minds to fit the image), definitely not for a Thoroughbred (he looks a great deal like a Quarter Horse). Despite this view, he turned out to be a pretty good mover.

“Looking at an usually overweight owner wearing a tux or a evening gown, trying to look good running next to a dog completely escapes me.”

Would it be better they wear sloppy gangsta sweats? What are they supposed to do?

BTW, they’re almost never the owner. These are professional “handlers”. It’s actually an unfortunate fact of AKC life.

(Honestly, if you go to shows - you’ll be amazed how many fat - fat - women there are in dogs, and I mean breeders/owners.)

Unfortunately the really big dogs don't have a very long life. We rescued a St Barnard when my son was young. Such a loving patient dog.

Most don’t but the Tibetan Mastiff is very long lived. Many live to be 14-15 which is really long for such a huge dog.

Did know that. The most difficult thing about having one of the larger dogs and letting go. May have think about that one for a while.

OTOH my Border Collies seem to fit well with our lifestyle...Newest is just six months old. So smart. She already know sit, jump, to the porch, shake paw, lay down.
Right now she is teething poor baby.

I really liked the Dobie and the Weimeraner.

And the Airedale. Airedales are just plain cool.

Daddy had an Airedale as a child. Hasn’t had another puppy of his own until I bought him the Border collies...They really look after him. Just as Jeep did (Pulled him off the train track by the diaper when a train was coming)

We have a 5 month old bitch that my wife kept from a litter. We weren’t supposed to keep any, that was the deal. The others were gone at 11 weeks to there new homes but she wanted to hang onto this one girl for a while and she’s teething. It’s a major effort to make sure she’s chewing on bully sticks instead of furniture, then the other dogs try to steal them from her.

They are mortal enemies of.....grizzly bears. How about that.

Mine took on 3 Dobie guard dogs and didn’t bat an eyelash.

What a dog.

Anytime the bigger dog gets near her, she screams bloody murder like any little sisters.

Curls up with the chickens, cat and absolutely loves the Mastiff. He is so patient with her.

We keep lots of chew toys, teething rings etc. DIL works in a pet shop.

The announcer said "Purpose of dog shows is to identify superior breeding stock",
You talk about subjective judging, this is it.
Wonder what the definition of superior is in this case.
Sounds like a bunch of snobs to me. --My dog and breed are better than yours.--

Donate here!

FR is looking for more Monthly Donors.
With dedicated Monthly Donors there would be no need for FReepathons.
Isn't Free Republic worth it? These FReepers think so. For the past several Thons they have donated $10 for each new monthly donor.

LibLieSlayer, afnamvet, DejaJude, upchuck, leapfrog0202, BuckeyeTexan, The Old Lady, onyx, RedMDer, Meg33, anonymous, BooBoo1000, glockrocks

Any FReeper can sponsor any number of New Monthly Donors at $10 per New Monthly Donor. Whatever number you're comfortable sponsoring!
All contributions are for the Current Quarter Expenses.
In other words, FR could go away if the expenses for this quarter are not met.
Where would you go?

Thanks for the thread. Love Westminster. Westie up!! We have had two in the last 20 year’s. Westitude they have it! But so much fun, great with kids, love outdoors in any weather and snuggle enough to be of comfort to all.
Our recent Westie lasted 9 year’s and just passed away in January. We thought we could live without a Westie in our life but just can’t. May be getting another soon so we can share our love again.
