Former military brass ‘shocked,’ ‘angered’ over USS Gabrielle Giffords
The Daily Caller ^ | 02/14/2012 | Caroline May

Retired Rear Admiral George Worthington, former commander of the Naval Special Warfare Command, told The Daily Caller that there are many people more worthy of a ship bearing their name.

“Here is the issue. There are a lot of dead Marines out there whose names could go on anything that appears to be an amphibious ship,” he said, explaining that a past recipient of the Medal of Honor, Dakota Meyer, might be a good candidate.

Worthington added his email “inbox” has been filled with messages from military friends who are “shocked and angered” by the decision.

“We think fallen Marines and perhaps supporting sailors should go on fantails before random victims,” he said.

This is the list of U.S. Naval warships named for a woman that are in active service (there are a few other ships named for women that are used for supply replenishment, oceangraphic research, etc; and the USS Roosevelt is named for both Franklin Delano and Eleanor Roosevelt):

USS Hopper (DDG-70), 1996. Built and commissioned at Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine, the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer is named for RDML Grace Murray Hopper, a computer technology pioneer who led the Navy into the digital age.

That's it - ONE. UNO. The only.

Hopper was, among other accomplishments, the builder of the first "compiler" (a program to translate a higher-level language to binary machine-code, immensely simplifying the task of programming) and the "mother" of the COBOL computer language (based primarily on the FLOW-MATIC language developed under her direction). COBOL is still widely used in business applications (and, I would guess, still used by the Navy is certain areas like logistics and personnel).

While it is wrong to attribute COBOL solely to Hopper, she had an enormous influence on it (since FLOW-MATIC was, essentially, the only WORKING computer language that formed a basis for COBOL.) And the creation of COBOL is one of the landmarks of technology in the 20th century.

To Hopper we now add: USS Gabrielle Giffords (LCS-10) Littoral Combat Ship named for Retired Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.

Giffords is, in many ways, an admirable woman. Grace Hopper is one of the TITANS in the history of the Navy. There is simply no comparison.

I’ll tell you what, Boxcar Willie has more of a claim to having a ship named after him than Gabby Giffords. He was a retired Air Force pilot who was a Korean War veteran. He at least has done enough (in my book) to have an overpass named after him.

"We have named ships for less, and we name ships after living people."

Are you saying that George H.W. Bush did not deserve having a ship named after him? Aside from being President, he was a WWII naval pilot. Shot down twice I believe. Perhaps that does not rise to the level of having a ship named after someone, but it's a lot farther up the ladder than Gabby Giffords having one named after her. If she hadn't gotten shot, would anyone outside of her district even know who she is?

So, he lost a couple of planes. Kennedy lost a boat. Both were Presidents.

Kennedy cut taxes ~ Hoorah!.

Bush said "Read my hips" and raised taxes ~ Booh!

Giffords was out in the open, on the job, meeting with constituents ~ of both parties too if the dead are any indication.

Certainly none of that is heroic work ~ but it is definitely getting harder and harder to find a Congress-critter anywhere but behind a locked door, or in hollering distance of the guards. I know my Congress-critter Rep. Cannoli has had peaceful, well meaning, kind and delightful visiting constituents ARRESTED!!!! And in the US Capitol Building.

I'd like to encourage better behavior by the members of Congress, particularly the Democrats.

We shouldn't need two shootings to get their attention I hope!

The USS Bill Clinton: hardly ever sets sail, spends most of its time in "friendly ports"

I wonder what the USS Obama and the Uss Jimmy Carter would be?

I think both would have as much luck as the TITANIC.

"So, he lost a couple of planes."

I looked it up. He flew 58 combat missions, won a distinguished flying cross and three air medals. Not something to pooh, pooh. Was it worthy of having an aircraft carrier named after him? Maybe not, but a helluva lot more worthy than having Gabby Giffords have a boat named after her. And so they should not be in the same sentence together. Which was my point to you in the first place.

We have become idiotic enough to name the next warship the “Whitney Houston”.

I used pappy Bush as an example of an unpopular politician WHO IS STILL ALIVE.

He wasn't as heroic as my uncle in WWII ~ who was a Ranger, on the ground ~ at Oran, at Anzio, at various other places.

So much for Bush.

Your uncle wasn’t the President of the United States, unpopular or not. Let me know when Giffords serves in the military and becomes president of the US.

She was a member of Congress shot down on the job!

Apparently it was a Democrat engineered assassination attempt on a Republican judge, but she got hit too.

They would say "She was expendable", just like in the John Ford film about Squadron 3.

Frankly, all I ask is that I don't get hurt so bad anybody feels the need to name something after me. My days of saving lives are probably long gone now so nothing heroic. But seriously, you just never see these Congress-critters out in public like that ~ probably because the risk of getting shot is just too high ~ but there you have it.
