Cops buy plots to prevent Josh Powell from being buried next to sons he killed

Two Washington state cops have purchased plots next to Josh Powell's young sons to prevent family members from burying him next to the boys he killed.

"The bottom line is, Josh Powell will not be near those two boys," Pierce County Sheriff's Sgt. Ed Troyer told Seattle-based radio station KIRO-FM on Wednesday.

Troyer and Sheriff Paul Pastor used their own money and dipped into funds from Crime Stoppers Tacoma-Pierce County to pay for plots two and four at Woodbine Cemetery in Puyallup, Wash. Troyer is executive director of the Crime Stoppers branch.

Charlie, seven, and Braden, five, are buried together in plot three. The boys were attacked with a hatchet and died in an explosion set off by Josh Powell during a supervised visit at a property in Graham, Wash. on Feb. 5.

"Sheriff Paul Pastor states, 'It's Disgusting that a murder suspect would be buried next to his victims,'" Troyer wrote on Twitter.

Troyer said that if the boys' mother Susan -- who inexplicably vanished in December 2009, with her husband named a person of interest in the case -- was found dead, she could be buried in one of the two plots next to her sons.

Crime Stoppers has launched an appeal for donations to pay for the total cost of the plots and plaques for the boys, expected to be up to $5,000.

"We weren't too worried about the price. We know people will step up and donate toward it," Troyer said.

The move came after media reports earlier said that Josh Powell's family had visited Woodbine Cemetery and picked out a plot near the boys, setting off a barrage of public anger.

Good for them. The plots were for sale and they bought them. Perfectly legal.

Wow, they’re doing the right thing. I’m proud of them for this.

“Good for them”

I agree. Why should the killer of these innocent little ones be rewarded by being buried next to them. Meanwhile, their Mom is where? Buried in some shallow grave or in a barrel somewhere? If they ever find her body, perhaps her family can purchase the grave so she can be buried next to her sons.

I'm guessing they each chipped in $5 and then "dipped into" county funds for the rest of the dough.

Powell was a creep, no doubt. But is this what we want law enforcement to do? It's just about 1 step removed from using the power of the law to piss on a bad man's grave. That's not government's function.

Law enforcement officers are people and members of that community. They are free to buy whatever they want.

That dysfunctional Powell grandfather will probably have his spawn Josh cremated and sprinkle his ashes over those poor little boys. He’s just that sick.

It’s the use of county funds that really disturbs me.

There may be no county funds involved, most are privately funded.

It’s not clear that the Crime-stopper funds are tax money - probably donations and they are soliciting contributions.

I am more disturbed by the murders of those two innocent children and their mother’s disappearance.

It wasn't public county funds.

CrimeStoppers of Tacoma-Pierce County has set up a fund to help pay for the two grave sites. Troyer is executive director of CrimeStoppers.

If the sperm donor is buried in one of the plots adjacent to these plots (so there is a blank plot between the boys and their murderer), I’m wondering if anyone would be allowed to erect a headstone on the empty plot that says, “These children here were murdered by that scumbag over there”?

Or, perhaps, “Public Restroom >>>>>”

“Pet Relief Station >>>> “

Just an idea.

That's the first thing I thought too. A nice gesture by the cops, by all the family of the father would have to do if they wanted to "flip them the bird" is cremate the father and sprinkle his ashes on the graves.

There is a saving Grace to that scenario - the Powells could not control the wind and rain washing his ashes away; or lightening striking an urn.

Praying for Grace.

Why should the tax payers pay for those plots, because a few cops are sour about the dad?

Torn. On the one hand, it's a stand-up thing (well, a lay-down thing, really); on the other, its more proof of the police mindset that they own you from cradle-to-grave. Is there any aspect of anyone's life they don't feel appointed to meddle in? Do they know how to mind their own business?

nah. The wrong people doing the right thing -- does not add up to a right. They should have approached family members and worked it that way - that would at least show some deference to the rights and responsibilities of someone besides cops.

The steady creep of the heavy hand of government continues, now invading even our cemeteries.

Question for all...if the person who bought the plots had been the owner of the local Blockbuster, or a clerk at the local Sears or Safeway who’d lived cheap and had a lot saved up, would any of your beefs still hold?

They’re doing a decent thing...the fact they’re cops is irrelevant in this case imo.

There’s not enough info to jump to any definite conclusions yet, but I (for one) refuse to paint all cops as “badge-heavy, Barney Fife’s”. The cops involved here strike me more as “Andy Griffith’s” and I will presume so until I have reason to think otherwise. Opinions may vary.

So the question isnt valid? The tax payers are footing the bill right? “noob” or “no noob” (whatever that matters) explain the importance of county funds aka tax payer money being used here

No tax payer money or county funds were used. I repeat; No tax payer money or county funds were used. It was paid for by Crime Stoppers of Tacoma-Pierce County.

“Crime Stoppers of Tacoma-Pierce County is a non-profit 501©3 organization dedicated to assisting law enforcement in solving crimes and locating wanted fugitives. Crime Stoppers works with the media to publicize unsolved crimes, takes anonymous tips from the public on unsolved crimes, distributes the tips to law enforcement for investigation, and pays cash rewards to tipsters whose information leads to an arrest and charges filed.”

It’s not clear if the cops are actually members of Crime Stoppers but even if they are, they are acting as private citizens in this capacity and I say good on them. (Cops BTW are allowed to have private lives and donate their time and money for charitable and not for profit orgs. I even hear some cops go to church /sarcasm). I saw them on F&F this morning and they reiterated that no public funds were used to purchase the plots but since a lot more private donations have come to the org from the local community and from across the country, the local Crime Stoppers chapter is hoping use those funds to purchase additional burial plots in that same cemetery that they can donate for other children who have been murdered if their families cannot afford such and set up a memorial to those innocent children.
