Weekly Gardening Thread (Vacation?) Vol. 6, February 17, 2012

Good afternoon gardeners. I have been debating all day if I should post this week’s thread. And can’t help myself at this point. I do not like stepping on JADB’s ownership of the thread and I hope y’all and she understands.

As many of you know my wife and I are moving from Meridian, Ms to Marshall, Tx and I was not sure I would be able to keep on gardening at the house we are leasing. Peggy has received a written approval letter from the owner for us to put in a small garden. So I will be trying my best to get one started this spring. I have already started some Marion tomato, Jalapeno, and Pimento seeds that I saved from last seasons garden. I received my Jung’s catalog this past week and have been flipping through it.

We will make the final move March 6 – 8. She is using her vacation days that week for the move. We are moving ourselves, renting a 26’ Penske truck. We have used them in the past and they have given us great service and the trucks are top notch. Wow just as fuel prices are rocketing sky high, just our luck! I expect Diesel fuel to be at $4/gal, in our area, by then.

Good luck on all of your gardens!

If you are a gardener or you are just starting out and are in need of advice or just encouragement please feel free to join in and enjoy the friendly discussion. Our Freeper community is full of gardeners, each with varying interests and skill levels from Master Gardener to novice.

Ditto, I think we've had more so far this year than most of last year. We have a little stream in front of our house that all but dried up last year. It has been roaring this year.

This photo was from earlier this week.

It has been raining in Marshall also. I talk to my wife every morning and she tells me to expect rain if it is raining there, as the typical patterns move from west to east!

Your coop, poultry, and projects are coming along fine. How is Jack? Is he out of HS yet? I’ve lost track of time.

Back to gardening. Have you tried a Keyhole garden? This came up a few months ago on the Texas forum and I thought it would be a great idea where I live because our HOA wouldn’t like a regular tilled up garden but to do something like this in the back yard I could easily say it is just a raised bed and make it look more decorative.

That would be welcome back! We have lived in the Katy area and San Antonio a few years ago.

Oh yes. I got my new front windows in last week while I was laid up with my strained ligaments (both knees). They look so great — it’s been a long time coming. 2 big windows and a new front door in my 50 year old house. 25 years waiting for that. The windows are so pretty that I’m not even going to cover them with curtains — just folding shades that can be taken up entirely out of the way.

The carpenter who put them in is a genius at restyling the the headers, and there will be very little maintenance. I have one window left to fix in the front and about 6 in the back and every window in this house will have been replaced.

Somebody pinged us all to a site for the First and Last Frost Dates yesterday. I’ll see if I can find it.

As you may remember I did not know diddly either. The original thread really helped me get into gardening!

I need help!
Husband gave me red cut roses for Valentines. They are ready for the compost pile. When I took them out of the vase I saw that they are sprouting short stems and leaves!
But, there are no roots. Does anyone know how to keep these alive until they root?
