Romney Doubles Down on Curious Claim about Santorum’s Spending Record
The Weekley Standard ^ | February 20, 2012 | Jeffrey H. Anderson

Mitt Romney is now explicitly arguing that Rick Santorum is not a fiscal conservative. CNN writes, “Mitt Romney unleashed his harshest public attacks to date on his surging rival, Rick Santorum, during a rally in Boise Friday. The former Massachusetts governor told an audience of more than one thousand people that Santorum was not a fiscal conservative, and accused him of contributing to the rising federal deficit during his time in the Senate.” CNN reports that Romney said, “If you want a fiscal conservative you can’t vote for Rick Santorum, ’cause he’s not.”

As was detailed last week, the National Taxpayers Union (NTU) would seemingly beg to differ. During a majority of Santorum’s 12 years in the Senate, NTU gave the Pennsylvania senator an A grade along with its “Taxpayers’ Friend Award,” given to “the strongest supporters of responsible tax and spending policies.” Across those dozen years, NTU never once gave Santorum less than a B, or “good,” rating. Of the 50 senators who served throughout Santorum’s tenure, NTU ranked Santorum 5th.

If this toad Romney makes it to be the nominee, just look how vapid and irrelevant his campaign will be if this is all he has to offer in the Primaries. This guy has absolutely nothing to offer people and he knows it. That is why he is focused on his slash and burn campaign. What an empty suit.

Just the facts ma’am.....Santorum never approved increased spending. He had little choice left in voting for the national debt increases since money was already spent.

I have always viewed Rick as more of a social conservative and lacking solid fiscal conservative understanding. However, as a fiscal conservative myself, I trust Rick more than Romney to govern as a fiscal conservative. Rick’s voting recording rating confirms that to some degree. I have not seen Romney do one single thing as a fiscal conservative—not one.

“He had little choice left in voting for the national debt increases “

I’ve seen the ad, probably by one of Mitt’s hit teams, mentioning Santorum voting to raise the debt ceiling. I was waiting for the ad to explain the ratio of debt compared with GDP those years. I’m thinking it was a much larger spread than it is now — it had to be. Conveniently, that information was omitted. It’s what dems do — just throw out a talking point without telling the whole story.

A lib friend of mine (I have one of them — but only one) rationalized Hussein’s raising the debt ceiling by saying, “Well, Reagan raised the debt ceiling.” She didn’t say, “neener neener neener”, but it was implied. I had to let her know the debt was only about 6% of GDP then (IIRC), and with Obama it was about 98%. Libs are idiots... But I don’t mean that in a bad way. ;)

Thanks HwyChile. So, moot question, if Romney were to win the nomination, what obscure politician from some southern or western state would he pick for his running mate?
