Erikur Arnasons performance was so mind-boggling that Virginia coach Reed Larson wouldnt have been out of line to ask the referees to perform an equipment check on Greenways senior goaltender.
With all his bulky gear, it would have been easy for Arnason to stuff an unauthorized good-luck charm inside a portion of his padding.
He had a horseshoe, Ill tell you what, Larson said, grasping for an explanation as to how his Blue Devils suffered a 4-2 loss to the Raiders in a Feb. 11 game in which they fired a stunning 75 shots on goal.
Arnasons 73-save gem is believed to be a state and possibly national record for the most saves recorded by a winning high school goaltender in a non-overtime game.
Ive never seen anything like it before in my life, Larson said. Ive been involved in games where a team had 50 or 60 shots, but the team that shot them shot half of them in the goalies chest. These were 73 opportunities to win the game.
I didnt know what to tell our players after the game.
The boys hockey records portion of the Minnesota State High School Leagues Web site lists International Falls Brady Hjelle as having the most stops in a regulation game with 74 in a 2006 matchup against Cloquet/Esko/Carlton. The Lumberjacks beat Hjelle and the Broncos 4-1.
Becker/Big Lakes Alex Darsow made what is believed to be a state and national record 102 saves a year ago in a 4-3 triple-overtime section playoff loss to River Lakes. That game lasted 81 minutes, 14 seconds of elapsed time.

Sounds like the Raiders don’t have a very talented defense. Good thing they’ve got a heck of a goalie.
If only my beloved Tampa Bay Lightning could find such a goalie....
Garon is a decent goalie. He’s been playing well in the net,but we need someone who is even more solid. I’m disappointed about the trading of Kubina and Downie.
St.Louis is getting up there in age (for a player, that is. He’s going to be 37 in June, just a year older than me).
You had Dwayne Roloson (a former Minnesota Wild goalie) last year. He was fantastic in the play-offs.
I was rooting for the Lightning all thru the play-offs.
He was solid last season when we were in the playoffs but he has been going downhill. We need a really solid goalie like Nicolai Khabibulin. I don’t know where he went but we need someone like him,or Tim Thomas.
I have a game-used goalie stick that was used a few years ago by Johan Holmqvist. It was only $12.50,which is dirt cheap. They run at least $300,from what I’ve been told.
I have Steven Stamkos’ autograph, which should be worth a lot of money in the future.
