Word For The Day, Wednesday, 2/22/12

;

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

shrive; verb

1. to impose penance on (a sinner). 2. to grant absolution to (a penitent). 3. to hear the confession of (a person).

Etymology: O.E. scrifan "assign, decree, impose penance," from W.Gmc. *skriban (cf. O.S. scriban, O.Du. scrivan, Du. schrijven "to write;" O.N. skrjpt "penance, confession"), an early borrowing from L. scribere "to write" (see script).

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Good Morning Class. Welcome to School!

Here is my example with WFTD.

Much more courageous, politically, than his father, Franklin Graham is not willing to shrive Obama's sins. I was tremendously impressed with his answers yesterday on Morning Joe, and hope he's not backtracking today. Of course, lefties are having the opposite reaction and saying he's NOT his dad, as if that's a bad thing. Billy gave cover to lots of lefties, Franklin appears to "get it" and isn't willing to do so.

Orthodox Great Lent starts next Monday, which is called Clean Monday. Next week, we shall have the opportunity to attend services of the Great Canon of St. Andrew of Crete, which is about sin and repentence.

http://orthodoxwiki.org/Great_Canon

When this has been done, that is the signal for many Orthodox Christians to start preparing for Holy Confession. Then we shall go to Confession and be shriven!

Successful? Barack wants to shrive
How dare you work hard and then thrive?

Shrive
(past plupurple tense of shrove)

Ash Wednesday? Sounds like wife #2 trying to thaw t.v. dinners. Trying to shrive down what she tortured with fire and called cooked mighta been penance but who lives long enough to need that much penance?

The best way for Obama to be shriven is by being driven out of office. that would be an adequate penance for my taste.

Shrives imposed yesterday don’t count for the 2012 Easter Season. The 2012 Season of Fasting and Penance starts today (in the Western Church) when we seek to be shriven by our priests. So, why is yesterday called Shrove Tuesday? Is that for all the 2011 shrives which arw now in the past tense? I’m so confused, and I forgot to eat my pancakes before midnight.

The thought has just occurred, why doesn’t IHOP capitalize on Shrove Tuesday? Is that because people have strayed so far from those traditions that not enough of them would understand the meaning? Or is that because IHOP thinks that their business would dry up on Wednesday, and they would be fasting for the rest of the season?

Found a parish near work that is having what they call a “Continuous Ash Service” from noon to one today. Just show up, no need to sit thru one of those there lengthy masses, and get your forehead ashed. If they made it even more convenient, say to where you need not even leave your car - would that be a Shrive-Thru?

Obama’s reelection campaign consists of a special shrive on the one “percenters” and a gallimaufry of forced contraception and abortifacient drugs paid for by religious organizations. This is minatory coverage of both Romney and Santorum/Gingrich. The game is on, as a certain Alaskan panjandrum would say. TheO and his team have written the cacography on the White House walls. They are attempting to set the zeitgeist for a win in November. It looks tenebrific for now, but when we find our idoneous candidate, we can force Obama into a funambulism that may well defeat him. I don’t wish to be a pedant and will exuviate any dread I have.

Last night my favorite dem driver shouted about his lack of conviction for theO and his reelection stating for all the world his intention of voting for a Republican. The guys all laughed their heads off. Not a dem voter to be found.

One of the guys asked me if a snowman had visited me this winter. In front of everyone, including my dem driver who has breakfast everyday with the snowman’s nemesis. Close one.

Yeah, pretty much. They’re good “fast” food cause they aren’t very big but they’re filling.

I’m much more likely to have fish or seafood any time of the year than pierogies. Based on the supermarket displays of them this time of year, i’m not alone.

i can assure you there isn’t a supermarket display showcasing piergoies down here anywhere. though i did find some nice fresh ones, not Mrs Ts, at the Wegmans back in early January. with soft tender dough not that hard Mrs T’s crap.

Isaiah tells us that fasting without changing our behavior is not pleasing to God:

“This, rather, is the fasting that I wish: releasing those bound unjustly, untying the thongs of the yoke; setting free the oppressed, breaking every yoke; sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless; clothing the naked when you see them, and not turning your back on your own” (Is 58:6-7).

I went and got ashes, took my bid to my customer, modified, as per her instructions (and shrunken wallet) to what she needs-a cosmetic repair-rather than what she wants-a total re-do-thanks so much, Obama...

I’m sure Michelle Antoinette
Won’t ask a priest to shrive her-
She certainly would be scolded
And he might even deprive her

Of her greedy, selfish pleasure
In fancy trips and gourmet meals
While peasants like you and me
Can only imagine how that feels

And so, on this Ash Wednesday
As Michelle is holding court
She forgets November is close
And her fun-time growing short...

I’ve got store-bought catfish in the freezer, but I really want fresh fish-I took my fishing stuff to the cliff edge behind the fence, but the low water has exposed too many loose rocks, so the trail is a tripping hazard. I’ll walk up the road later to see if I can find a safe way down to the water, but I’m guessing it will be frozen fish fillets for dinner...

I love shrimp alfredo-do you use the packaged alfredo sauce stuff or make it fresh?

I have plenty of fish recipes-most quick and easy because MrT5 and I always ate fish on Fridays-as I usually still do-I’ll trade a recipe or two for your shrimp alfredo one.

In fact, maybe we could get a few favorite Lenten recipes posted here...
