Word For The Day, Wednesday, 2/22/12
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
shrive; verb
1. to impose penance on (a sinner). 2. to grant absolution to (a penitent). 3. to hear the confession of (a person).
Etymology: O.E. scrifan "assign, decree, impose penance," from W.Gmc. *skriban (cf. O.S. scriban, O.Du. scrivan, Du. schrijven "to write;" O.N. skrjpt "penance, confession"), an early borrowing from L. scribere "to write" (see script).
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
my very first pet was a black and tan coonhound. so there ya go.
um, i think not. xsteen rowed crew at Visitation freshman year. and she twarn’t the coxswain either.
I’d be scared, what with all the sharks still following that route, too. According to Rep Lewis, that is.
did you ever read Life of Pi? That and another book written by the brother of a friend of our’s who sailed and nearly died in a shipwreck, but ended up surviving, have left me with zero interest in any sort of shipcraft.
Isaiah tells us that fasting without changing our behavior is not pleasing to God:
“This, rather, is the fasting that I wish: releasing those bound unjustly, untying the thongs of the yoke; setting free the oppressed, breaking every yoke; sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless; clothing the naked when you see them, and not turning your back on your own” (Is 58:6-7).
Gotta be careful raising kids and coon hounds togather...no tellin what the hounds might catch.
I went and got ashes, took my bid to my customer, modified, as per her instructions (and shrunken wallet) to what she needs-a cosmetic repair-rather than what she wants-a total re-do-thanks so much, Obama...
I’m sure Michelle Antoinette
Won’t ask a priest to shrive her-
She certainly would be scolded
And he might even deprive her
Of her greedy, selfish pleasure
In fancy trips and gourmet meals
While peasants like you and me
Can only imagine how that feels
And so, on this Ash Wednesday
As Michelle is holding court
She forgets November is close
And her fun-time growing short...
I’ve got store-bought catfish in the freezer, but I really want fresh fish-I took my fishing stuff to the cliff edge behind the fence, but the low water has exposed too many loose rocks, so the trail is a tripping hazard. I’ll walk up the road later to see if I can find a safe way down to the water, but I’m guessing it will be frozen fish fillets for dinner...
have storebought shrimp to make shrimp pasta alfredo for dinner later. i don’t really know how to cook fish, wish i did.
oh and A+++ !
Thank you!
I love shrimp alfredo-do you use the packaged alfredo sauce stuff or make it fresh?
I have plenty of fish recipes-most quick and easy because MrT5 and I always ate fish on Fridays-as I usually still do-I’ll trade a recipe or two for your shrimp alfredo one.
In fact, maybe we could get a few favorite Lenten recipes posted here...
I saw through the lengthy mass, got my ashes. Dang, but your service sounds easier.
sat through...rme
Fish is easy: Bread it. Fry till done. :-)
I’ve made it from scratch, too, but I like the taste and convenience of the Knorr packages that you mix with milk and butter/margerine.
I hadn’t decided on a veggie for dinner, but you reminded me that I have a couple of fresh zucchinis-I’ll slice one of them and a small onion, and saute them in butter with lemon pepper and fresh basil-that goes very well with fish.
I like to slice up my zucchini, spray with pam, arrange the zucchini on it spray again and top with Parmesan cheese....then bake. Yummy and almost no calories.
Was an odd definition of ‘continuous.’ Me and the red-headed office manager showed up at about a quarter after - figuring an on-going process was something to which ya can’t be “late.” But clearly we missed a reading or two, and the deacon in charge was in the midst of making sense of it all with a homily-like thing. A little more praying, some blessing, then we all became ash-heads and were out of there a bit after 12:30. Faster than a full mass, but not the shrive-by we had hoped for.
Thanks for the zucchini recipe-this one is the one I use most for fish, because it is fast and easy but I can’t post a link because it is out of one of my recipe books-
1 lb. fresh fish fillets, washed in cold water
1/2 cup of dry white wine
3 tblsp butter or margerine
juice of 1 lg. lemon
1 tblsp minced garlic (I use 2)
1/4 tsp fresh ground black pepper (I use more)
Combine all ingredients in a glass baking dish, cover and bake in 375 oven until done, or cover with plastic wrap and bake on 60% power in microwave until tender.
Now that sounds yummy-I’ll have to try that soon, too-especially since I always plant zucchini and summer squash because they can grow in this thin soil, along with spinach. It is “squash season” all summer here-the spinach gives out in late June, to be replaced by bush peas/beans, okra and collards, but the squash doesn’t give up until frost, so I appreciate every new recipe...
Oops-I should have posted this to you-
