Former lieutenant says he regrets handling of fatal DUI involving Chicago cop
Chicago Tribune ^ | February 22, 2012 | Jason Meisner and Jeremy Gorner

A teenage boy was dead, his crumpled bicycle still lying underneath a van at the South Side intersection where he was struck by a speeding car shortly before 2 a.m. A few blocks away, off-duty Chicago police Officer Richard Bolling had been stopped driving the wrong way down a one-way street, the windshield of his Dodge Charger smashed and splattered with blood. The patrol officers smelled alcohol on his breath and found an open bottle of beer in the console.

If it were a typical fatal DUI investigation, the driver would be promptly asked to consent to field sobriety tests and a breath test.

But with an off-duty cop involved, Lt. John Brundage decided to order the patrol officers to hold off on testing Bolling until a higher-ranking commander arrived, leaving the officer to sober up in the back of the police car as crucial minutes ticked by that early morning in May 2009. Two hours after the crash, Bolling was given a field sobriety test. He wasn't ordered to take a breath test until almost three hours after the field test.

On further reflection I think I should ask: Can you be a little more specific? What issues do you think that I have that I need help for?

Opposition to affirmative action? Lots of people need help then.

Acknowledgment of the fact that less ability means less competence?

making the observation that the less competent are sometimes likely to take shortcuts. I don’t see that as a problem.

So what is my “problem” that I need help with.

I don’t know where you get that idea. Obviously, he handled this incompetently, and corruptly.

I have no idea how competent he would be if he wasn’t corrupt, and neither do you.

My point was against affirmative action only. Go back and re-read what I said. I have no problem with competent people, be they minorities, or otherwise.

I do have a problem with people receiving preferences based on their race, sex, orientation, or other such. Obviously, you do not.

You jumped in with race as a reason for cop miconduct - and the cops were not, from the article, members of a “protected minority.”

There are exactly two human races extant - homo sapiens sapiens, and homo sapiens neanderthalus - and the jury is still out on “two.” Many believe that we are the same race.

My point is that affirmative action has no place in the discussion of this criminal incident.

Actually, I was responding to another poster about affirmative action.

And I said, I didn't know if it had any bearing (I hadn't bothered, at that time to look at the pictures of the guilty parties). Frankly, I don't know how I could have been more clear.

I was talking about affirmative action in response to the statement that it contributed to these types of actions. And I think that it probably does.

But it doesn't have to, and these incidents can happen with non-aa action personnel.

Personally, I see nothing wrong with a seque from the specific to the general; subjects can change in the course of a conversation. But perhaps you do.

Would you care to translate that last comment.

Perhaps not.

Nevertheless, affirmative action is an evil that must be eradicated.

And, who knows how it may contribute negatively to the culture of that police force.

Anyway, I didn’t bring the subject up in the first place. I was responding to another poster.

One other question, where exactly is “homo sapiens neanderthalus” extant?

And if we are including extinct species, should old homo erectius get a nod?

“Here in Bavaria, we have no racial hatred, you stupid PIG (Prussian)”

Oh, the irony. It works on so many levels...

“neanderthal” is a german word, meaning “dead dude from the next valley over.”

Watch out when you get xenophobic - you might get your wish.

Right here - all around you. Ever met a redhead?

My understanding, which is admittedly limited, is that the genes that cause red-headedness in modern man, and those that caused it in neaderthal, are two differnet gene complexes.

Still, assuming they’re not, modern red-heads can freely interbreed, with fertile offspring, with non-redheads. Which pretty much definitely says they are all the same species. God bless redheads.

Thank you for the translation.

I can only state that being against affirmative action certainly does not, in and of itself, qualify one as a racist. On the other hand, as affirmative action is race-conscious, and race-based, and disadvantages one base solely on skin color, does so qualify a supporter.

This does not, however, in and of itself, mean that the racism is based on either hatred or malice, although it certainly can be.

Nor does either position equate with xenophobia.
