Word For The Day, Monday, 2/27/12
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
1. characterized by sickly sentimentality; weakly emotional; maudlin. 2. having a mildly sickening flavor; slightly nauseating
Etymology: 1668, sickly, nauseated, from M.E. mawke "maggot" (see maggot). Sense of "sickly sentimental" is first recorded 1702
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Here is my example with WFTD.
Obama's mawkish apologizing must be brought to the fore so that the people can judge him appropriately.

No pushing at the door please!
rise and get to shining!
Similarly, a maudlin tropical bird lover is macawkish.
good one! ya birdbrain ; ) A+++
On Syria, Barry is mawkish
When he needs to be brawny and hawkish
On Libya, his cry
Was, “We cannot stand by”
But on Homs, he is distant and dorkish
you are so damn good, Truthy! A+++++
I would love to see Lt Col Allen West become The Speaker of the House.
Then we will not have to be subjected to any more of the Present Speaker’s mawkish displays.
very interesting! A+++
Love me some Allen West, but we must always ping the president of his fanclub, ms. explorer89, when we speak of him ; ) A+++
Without getting overly mawkish
You like all your limericks New Yawkish
with a little bit of filth thrown in ; )
Then there was that Waltons spin-off about Paw & Maw Kish that never took off...
Truthy, so little of what people claim is poetry is really even halfway decent, but you and Texan5 have a gift. Luckily there are a few others here who also come up with some pretty good limericks, but then who doesn’t like a clever limerick?
I didn’t know that! :-)
goodnight, mik ; ) A+++
Thanks very much for the kind words.
Little Billy got into the spiked Christmas punch and started drunkenly singing “I saw mawkish Santa Claus!”
good first effort, welcome to class : ) A+++
The WWII army brass didn’t like Bill Maudlin’s mawkish cartoons of dirty, muddy, unshaven GI’s drawn ever-so-accurately in their foxholes and trenches.....
That brings my cumulative GPA up to .5
Thanks, we need someone to always post the picture of him finishing the Palm Beach half marathon whenever his name is invoked. As president of his fan club, I may make it a new FR “rule” for threads, ala Maureen Dowd and Michael Douglas’s new wife, whose name escapes me right now. I could get mawkish.
Now you do! See aforementioned rule. :)
I woke up to mawkish news of a school shooting in Ohio. I thought this trend had died down. Some drivel about revenge for a FB post?
ya gotta start somewhere! ; )
A+++ i am going to give you the benefit of the doubt, bc you have been a conscientous student, that you didn’t cheat offa Mik for this homework... ; )
Certanly not! And don't let these eyeglasses with rearview mirrors say differently.
i’ve got my eye on you, young man... ; )
Let’s not get them shooting at each other. GMTA after all.
BTW, xshub bought some good seats to the last home game at SU against Louisville this coming weekend. He and xsboy are going to go. xshub is beyond psyched about the way this season has gone. my fear is a premature flameout in the tournament and then xshub will be on SUICIDE WATCH!
don’t be mawkish....SU has had an awesome season. I was watching the game, but every time I put the book down to watch the other team started catching up, so I had to read and peak....call me superstitious.
it’s precisely because SU lets the other team have a shot at winning that i fear the worst! They p!$$ed away a huge lead to win at the buzzer against UCONN. xshub hates UCONN almost as much as he loathes the Hoyas.
well, with a crowd that big the paramedics are already on scene. that should be some comfort......but if my intuition is working, SU will get well into the finals before I will worry. not sure if they will go all the way, but close. my prediction, for what it’s worth.
oh dear God, one of the students died this morning. may he/she RIP.
Next week is the last Big East tournament as we know it. Pity Pitt is in no condition to take a serious run.
it frees you up to cheer for SU.... ;^)
i asked xshub and he said the move happens in 2013 for football, and 13-14 for basketball, so this may not be the last BE tourney as we know it.
xshub, jinxing SU badly at this point, just told me to keep Palm Sunday weekend open for NOLA. RME. i asked if i would be stuck in restricted view section this time, bc the last Final Four in NOLA that we went to [the year SU won] xsbrownie and i were in the crap seats, and the other three sat in the good ones ; ) We have gone to New Orleans for both prior Final Fours where SU played. Lost the first to Indiana [pre-children], won the second [pulled all three out of school to go].
I went on Netflix this weekend and watched Downton Abbey. I ended up watching the whole first season (7 episodes). Definitely interesting, thanks for the recommendation.
My daughter didn’t like it cause she couldn’t understand what was happening. All of the polite words masking the real subtext underneath.
Thank you for the compliment-it brightens this rainy day...
AWESOME! my gut tells me that is a good thing. I wish I could go.
I watched The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo last night on Netflix......after going to the theater to see Safe House.
It got too damp to do any more tile work-it has been raining off and on since noon, and both of my customer’s jumpy chihuahuas started running in and out of my work area with wet feet, so I gave up and came home.
There is a thing that annoys me
About many of a conservative bent-
Their mawkish whining makes me wonder
Where their cojones and courage went
No one is going to be inspired
By a leader playing Pollyanna-
That tactic has Afghanis acting
Like a pack of starved pirhana
This time let’s pick a leader
Who won’t apologize and barter-
Someone more like Ronald Reagan
And much less like Jimmy Carter
From what I heard earlier on that school shooting, they were saying that the kid was maybe motivated by jealousy over a break-up with a girl and had posted his intentions on Face Book. It seems that too many people have no idea what their kids are posting on the internet, much less what is going on in their kid’s life.
Glad you liked Downton Abbey - I ended up buying both seasons because that is the type of show I will watch over and over again - Season Two is good as well
No rain here at all today - very overcast all day and the air was cool - you could almost feel the water in the air, but not a drop fell.
Is season two the one that just ended?
Very interesting characters and stories, and some of the lines are just perfect. Like the Dowager saying no Englishman would ever die in someone else’s house — certainly not someone he hardly knew!
A very little amount of rain fell in spots on my way from the airport to Webster. I was desperately trying to figure out how to turn the wipers on in the rental car! Got the rear ones going. Not a lot of help!
