Word For The Day, Monday, 2/27/12
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
mawkish; adj.
1. characterized by sickly sentimentality; weakly emotional; maudlin. 2. having a mildly sickening flavor; slightly nauseating
Etymology: 1668, sickly, nauseated, from M.E. mawke "maggot" (see maggot). Sense of "sickly sentimental" is first recorded 1702
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
I went on Netflix this weekend and watched Downton Abbey. I ended up watching the whole first season (7 episodes). Definitely interesting, thanks for the recommendation.
My daughter didn’t like it cause she couldn’t understand what was happening. All of the polite words masking the real subtext underneath.
Thank you for the compliment-it brightens this rainy day...
AWESOME! my gut tells me that is a good thing. I wish I could go.
I watched The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo last night on Netflix......after going to the theater to see Safe House.
It got too damp to do any more tile work-it has been raining off and on since noon, and both of my customer’s jumpy chihuahuas started running in and out of my work area with wet feet, so I gave up and came home.
There is a thing that annoys me
About many of a conservative bent-
Their mawkish whining makes me wonder
Where their cojones and courage went
No one is going to be inspired
By a leader playing Pollyanna-
That tactic has Afghanis acting
Like a pack of starved pirhana
This time let’s pick a leader
Who won’t apologize and barter-
Someone more like Ronald Reagan
And much less like Jimmy Carter
From what I heard earlier on that school shooting, they were saying that the kid was maybe motivated by jealousy over a break-up with a girl and had posted his intentions on Face Book. It seems that too many people have no idea what their kids are posting on the internet, much less what is going on in their kid’s life.
Glad you liked Downton Abbey - I ended up buying both seasons because that is the type of show I will watch over and over again - Season Two is good as well
No rain here at all today - very overcast all day and the air was cool - you could almost feel the water in the air, but not a drop fell.
Is season two the one that just ended?
Very interesting characters and stories, and some of the lines are just perfect. Like the Dowager saying no Englishman would ever die in someone else’s house — certainly not someone he hardly knew!
A very little amount of rain fell in spots on my way from the airport to Webster. I was desperately trying to figure out how to turn the wipers on in the rental car! Got the rear ones going. Not a lot of help!
The female lead in that movie, Rooney Mara, is product of inbreeding between the New York Giants’ Mara family and the Steelers’ Rooneys. Talk about a pedigree.
In this Sunday’s Parade magazine someone asked for some info about her, and can you believe they did NOT mention that fact?
The Oscars are kinda mawkish, but still, in a way, interesting:

A+++ who knows what will happen, i am still depressed!
do it, and as prez you are responsible for finding and posting that pic the first time; we will keep it up thereafter!
A+++ it’s a pop culture thing.
i had to google her bc i saw reference being made on twitter to her looking like Olive Oyl at the Oscars. There are pix of her looking somewhat decent, but the oscar pic just has her looking scary.

O M G. suddenly i cannot breathe....
