Meryl Streep joined a very exclusive club on Sunday, winning her third acting Oscar for her role as a strident Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady."
Streep, 62, won best actress for her 17th Oscar nomination, the most times any performer has been nominated by the Academy.
Her third win put her in a category with other three-time Oscar winners Jack Nicholson, Walter Brennan and Ingrid Bergman. Only Katharine Hepburn with four wins had more.
She joked about how many times she's been up for acting's highest honors.
"When they called my name, I had this feeling I could hear half of America going, 'Oh no... her again,'" Streep said.
Streep played the British prime minister as a senile retiree, as well as a hectoring, dominant figure who instilled fear and respect in her own cabinet. At the film's pinnacle, Streep as Thatcher is the backbone of a nation that goes to war over the distant Falkland Islands after Argentina invades in 1982.
She thanked her fans "for this inexplicable wonderful career" and paid special tribute to her husband, sculptor Don Gummer.
Streep also called out for special mention her "other partner," J. Roy Helland, who has done her makeup since 1982 in "Sophie's Choice," the movie that won Streep her first best actress award. Streep also won for best supporting actress for the 1979 movie, "Kramer vs. Kramer."
Makeup artist Helland won earlier in the night, sharing the award for best makeup with Mark Coulier.
Streep said backstage that when she first saw herself in old-age makeup, "I saw my dad."
"Maybe my dad looked like Margaret Thatcher."
But she and the makeup crew gradually reduced the amount of rubber prosthetics until she looked more like herself.

Ms Streep is indeed a superb actress.
But, as far as Hollywood and their “awards” go...

She was truly amazing in The Iron Lady. She captured the facial expressions, the gestures, the mannerisms, and the stance of an elderly, declining person, and gave enormous drama and pathos to Thatcher’s recollections of her husband and family. I’m glad she won.

Amazing how many derogatory things this biased piece stated about one of the most successful women politicians in modern history. Of course, if they were describing Hillary Clinton, “strident,” “hectoring,” and “domineering” would be replaced with “bold,” “persuasive” and “forceful.”
Anything with the NBC tag is Leftist propaganda, and they are proud of it.
She is indeed a great actress. The best there is today. I loved her in Devil Wears Prada. Have not seen Iron Lady yet. Will rent it most likely. If anyone has ever seen Sophie’s Choice and not shed a tear or two, then I submit they are not human....
Woody Allen was not there last night, I hope he isn’t ill.
Her acting is always the same - she cries and her nose gets red. That's it. Her movies are only useful to the suicidal who desire to be bored to death.
Wow! I just watched parts of this movie on a dvd last night. I thought her performance was unbelievably campy. It was like watching the great Catherine O’Hara doing Thatcher on an old SCTV skit.
I wouldn’t go that far. I think she’s a smart woman with a lot of craft, intelligence, humor. But she does have a certain sameness about her and also a certain tendency to over act.
I remember way, way back in the 1979 time frame. I asked an older co-worker if he’d seen Kramer vs. Kramer. He said he hadn’t but that it was a notable first as it was the first time Streep got to play herself - i.e. a witch.
I kinda like her but I can see the point of those that don’t.
As Pauline Kael used to say: she’s an android, not a human being. And if I want to watch an impressionist, I’ll go over to You Tube and watch Frank Gorshin. She has always been the most overrated actress in America. She does accents because there is no “there” there - and, sometimes, in interviews, she herself has confessed this.
She is a phenomenal actress, there is no doubt. Unlike a lot of the hollywood nonsense where its clearly nepotism, pr or hype, this lady is an honest talent. A true rarity in a town where no talent hacks like Cameron Diaz can find steady work.

I thought her portrayal was amazing, but the liberals in Hollywood did a hatchet job on Thatcher with the movie. It made Thatcher look pathetic rather than sympathetic. Her achievements were minimized and denigrated.
I’ll have to see The Artist, in see if it was better than Hugo, which I thought should have won going in.
I will always remember her from the mini-series, “Holocaust”.
I always figured back when they were filming she was dating James Woods...but it turned out at that time she was dating the then-dying John Cazale(Fredo) when they were also filming “The Deer Hunter.”
I loved her in Silkwood.
