The True 1% (And What To Do About Them)

Over the past few years we have been treated to the spectacle of a holy axis of anti-traditional beliefs of free markets, constitutional principles and conservative social values between three coordinating groups: Occupy Wall Street, the Washington Establishment and the National Media. We, the people, have allowed the argument to be framed exactly the way the establishment wants it to be: free-market capitalism versus progressive egalitarianism, with the only difference between Washington Republicans and Democrats being the degree of managing the argument. Protection from this attack can be, and has been, bought by large banks, large corporations, Wall Street honchos, Hollywood ‘stars’, etc. by either providing campaign funds or supporting the non-profit entities that fund much of the ‘cover’ given to these practitioners.

This alliance is truly the 1%, and they expect the rest of us, regardless of political belief, to blindly follow suit. And while the economic picture was good most of us did little more than pay lip service to getting involved, while allowing this 1% to get away with their games, their superficial lives, their ego-driven lifestyles. But now they are no longer worth the cost, either economically or spiritually. It is time to make it clear their time is over; that the lie of egotistical, snobby elitism is over. It is time to take power away from the elite step by step. Hit them where it hurts, in the pocket book and in their sense of self worth. Support candidates, regardless of party, who are willing to think outside the box and take the fight to them. Americans can legitimately argue between the roles of freedom, what the constitution says, how much safety net is needed, foreign policy, etc. without having their desires circumvented after the fact by ‘official Washington’, supported by know all media (Broadcast, Hollywood and other cultural overseers) and Academia.

But how to defang the monster?

A serious first step is to take down the role of Washington D.C. as a gathering place for those seeking to inculcate themselves into this culture. One of the best ways to do this is to dispatch it physically. We have certain areas around the country that have seen economic devastation during the past twenty years. Taking a page from this inept president and his OWS minions I propose the following ‘share the wealth’ strategies:

1. Move the Social Security Administration headquarters to Detroit 2. Move the Agriculture Department to St. Louis 3. Move the FDA to New Orleans 4. Move the Health and Human Services Department to Newark, N.J.

All of these cities have large African-American populations with high unemployment rates. What better way to help those folks than with this particular jobs program?

The second step is to teach the media a lesson financially. Anyone who cashes a paycheck from ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox Broadcasting or PBS has a subsidized lifestyle due to the access to a broadcasting spectrum controlled by the U.S. government. We all know the 1% level incomes that many of the ‘media stars’ make at these networks. One would think that those spectrum licenses would be worth a good deal of money. Let’s see how much by putting them up for renewal in 2013, with anyone being able to bid on them. If they are more valuable to an ATT or Verizon as wireless capacity, or to DirecTV and Dish as broadcast access, or even to Apple, IBM and Google as cloud computing capacity, then let them pay the taxpayers what its’ worth.

Wouldn’t it be fun to see those network 1%er’s squeal when their paychecks are taken away?

Now let’s look at Academia. Nowhere have we true 99%ers have been screwed more than in Academia. Whether through the curriculum (when was the last time you thumbed through your kid’s history text or environmental book – my son’s 11th grade text insists man-made global warming is a given), the tenure or the indoctrination, the 1% controls the flow of information. On top of that, they’ve managed to charge an arm and a leg for the privilege of teaching about 5 hours a week, grade papers (when they do so) for another 10 hours, and the rest doing any sort of research they deem worthy of their time.

I suspect that technology will do the job on them in the future. As cloud computing grows and employers move more and more of their learning to the cloud, providers outside the Academia mafia will provide more and more of it. Homeschooling will be made easier by the same technological innovation. But that doesn’t mean we ignore the educational establishment and hope for the best. Textbooks tend to get approved at the state level. Pressure needs to be brought to those committees that approve them for student use. Push the state legislators to make hearings public; let the public see the debate. Right now most people ignore this issue and it is very important to fight for both the values we desire as well as the portrayal of historical information.

Three very simple political daggers into the heart of progressive elitism; let’s make it happen.
