[Excerpts from the news video] ...
Mitt Romney- "I'm a big believer in getting money where the money is, and the money is in Washington.
...
I've learned from my Olympic experience, if you have people who really understand how Washington works and have personal associations there, you can get money to help build economic development opportunities. ...
We actually received over 410 million dollars from the Federal Government for the Olympic games. That is a huge increase over anything that I have ever done before. We did that by going after every agency in government.
...
I believe that the number was over a million dollars of Department of Education funding to buy tickets for kids. This way, we got kids there and we also got additional revenues we didn't have. That kind of creativity is what I want to bring in everything we do. ...
I want to go after every grant, every project, every department..."
...
On the 2012 campaign trail Mittens goes on the attack,
"Republicans spend too much money, borrowed too much, and earmarked too much, and Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich have to be held accountable. In this race, I'm the only guy who has not spent time in Washington. "

It’s a decade old and won’t matter to our little Republican primary voters who only know that McPain, Dole, and GHWB say it is “Mitt’s turn.”
Maybe he was just “taking one for the team”?
oh no, that was Santorum.
Dream on...

He’s got more baggage than a C-130; it won’t be hard for Obummer & Co to take him down hard, if he gets the nomination. God help us all.
The Olympic games are an elitist enterprise and should not be funded by taxpayers at all.
Let the sponsors, Nike, Gatorade, Michelob Ultra, etc. pay for it.
Yeah it is big time damaging to Mittens.
All a Super Pac or Santorum or Gingrich has to do is use it against him in political ads. His number will plunge.
A man who describes sucking the federal teat as “creativity” will not get my vote in the primary or the general.
Big time...right from Mitten's mouth. It has been served up on golden platter.
So you are ok with 5 more years of Obama?
“In this race, I’m the only guy who has not spent time in Washington.”
Because I use a really long rake!
If Rick and/or Newt had the same amount of money that Mitt has, if not more, then Mitt wouldn’t be the frontrunner, right now. Mitt continues to have more money than the others, and Mitt has been running for POTUS since 2004=more organization at the national level, for awhile.
Sad but true. Folks know where the candidates are on the issues and now it's all about who they like and who their neighbors like.
All rational thought is out the window.
Not only does this video show Romney the so-called business guy panhandling for “free government money,” it excellently shows the lying hypocrisy of Romney that comes from his very own mouth.
No, WE are the ones who are damaged. It's over. My children will tell their children stories about a place called America, but they will only be shiny fairy tales of something that is out of reach.
No. I'm also not okay with four years of Romney. I don't plan to swallow strychnine to avoid arsenic.
Santorum was part of the Senate leadership. His option was to resign that position. That did not seem, at the time, a practical thing to do, because he would have been in the same position where Ron Paul found himself for most of his time in public office, a person who had to be content to getting what scraps fell from the table for his district.
So you are ok with 5 more years of Obama?

Which one do you chose ???
Choose wisely....
Thanks ...... I just Tweeted this to Newt and anyone reading his Tweets will also pick it up. :O)
You find yourself making excuses.
I’d rather you say “yeah well I still like him so I’ll vote for him” which I can live with.
But to twist and dance and make more excuses is kind of lame for a FR poster - even moreso for a presidential candidate.
jmo
I wish you were right. But, MittWitt the Mormon Bishop, is being selected by American Christians to be the GOP nominee. I never thought Id see the day. But here we are.
This election will be a liberal vs. a liberal
---
Dream on...
If there was a more viable alternative, Romney would be severely damaged by this and a slew of other flaws as a GOP candidate in 2012. To the typical primary voter, Romney looks to be the least worst option out there, and I am not sure this quote or much of anything will help one of the other three win.
No excuse. But in fact that is how a legislator must operate. He is, after all, responsible only to his constituents. I suggest you read Federalist #10, by Madison. Indeed the most underrated of our founding fathers. From the Mt.Vernon Conference to the spring of 1790, he was the most effective politician in the country. A political genius of the first water. At the Convention, in the Virginia ratification convention, and in the organization of the new government, he got things done. Leadership in a legislative body is very different than leadership in the executive. You are never your own man. The exceptions prove the rule. But men like John Quincy Adams are the exception; he makes Ron Paul seem like a trimmer, but even he made concessions to get things done, for he knew the name of the game.
Obama is a "liberal?" That makes Chavez a liberal.
I suggest you read _all_ the federalist papers ;)
that is how a legislator must operate
Leadership in a legislative body is very different
You are never your own man
Seem like excuses to me. While I will agree that concessions are the bilateral essence of negotiation, the necessary counterpart of concession is gain... there has to be something worth trading for such concessions. The reason for concessions cannot reasonably be “that is how a legislator must operate”, “Leadership in a legislative body is very different”, and “You are never your own man”.
just sayin’
Too bad the alternatives are Rick “earmarks are good” Santorum and Newt “the ultimate insider” Gingrich.
Because I use a really long rake!
When you sup with the devil
You need a long spoon.
And yet, most of the smear jobs done on Newt were blasts from the past too.....
Herman Cain's take down had too many Chicago machine connections for comfort. The media leads the attack against Santorum. It seems every time a candidate looks like they may take off not only does the Romney/Paul team attack but so does the groups on the left.
I fear that the American people will turn back to a candidate who believes in the wrong things than risk a candidate who believes in nothing and thus appears weak.
Santorum, DNC candidate #3
Newt needs to DITCH the R party, cause it's the same as the D party!
Redistribute the wealth.
This is why the democrats are pushing for Mittens now and think they can defeat him in the general.
Obama, Mittens. Not much difference except that Obama truly hates our country.
You mean, blasater, that you thought the little Republican primary voters could make a sane choice? "Sanity" now means Mittens! It's all they understand. Bob Dole says so too.
Perhaps you should read your tagline again.
This is why it is hard for a party legislative leader to run for executive office. The jobs are so different. Paul Ryan, as a comittee chairman is better situated than Cantor, for instance. But even he is going to have to explain some of his votes, because he does have to take one for the team, from time to time, or he wont be chairman for long. Ron Paul and Michelle Bachman each choose to play the lone wolf and you can get by with it so long as your constituents choose to send you back. But if legislating is your thing, you can’t do it alone. One thing you do learn to do as a leader is how to manage men. Abraham Lincoln began to acquire the skills he showed as President as a leader of the Whigs in the Illinois legislator. He and his party also bankrupted the state, but thats another story.
I’ve heard various whores saying contradictory things in the past and I really didn’t pay much attention.
i googled to find out whatever i could about this. this apparently isn't teaparty or conservative news. the dnc released a web video attacking romney for his olympic spending in the middle of last month (i may have missed it with surgery and it didn't pop up with 'olympic' in search). it was covered by the hill and others back on february 17. the expenditures and the dnc video - and mccain's statements - are already the subject of a factcheck.org article. john mccain was quite vocally opposed to them . . . back then, although he's trying to re-cast his previous statements now.
i don't know who leaked the internal video of mitt bragging about the money, but i know that i missed all of the hooplah about the federal spending on the olympics. du has been addressing romney's spending and mccain's backtracking already.
Thanks Red Steel. It’s just possible that the only thing left Zippy can hope for is to have his 2012 campaign buried in an unmarked grave, to prevent desecration.
Assuming the 527 / SuperPAC attack ads actually use this.
There ....
yep
This is one of the reasons that I wish FR had an upvote system to send top-rated comments to the top of the page. This should be the very first comment any one would read on this thread.
Great reference.
Great stuff. There is a blank spot when you try to find out just what Mitt DID to “save the olympics”.
He acted like a liberal!
