  10/29/61 "The Bee or Not to Bee Matter" Matter #764 Mandel Kramer, John Thomas (Pat Fuller), Ivor Francis (hotel manager Jacques Devereaux), Robert Dryden (Harry Bane/Mr. Chatsworth), Gertrude Warner (Mrs. Chatsworth), Bob Donnelly (assistant warden) ; Writer - Jack Johnstone ; Producer/ Director - Bruno Zirato, Jr. ; Music Supervisor - Ethyl Huber ; Announcer - Art Hannes ; Expense Account Total = $471.00 ; CBS ; One of the cleverest ways to work a racket that ever tripped up a crook. Pat Fuller, who has replaced the retired Pat McCracken at Universal Adjustment Bureau, calls Johnny for help. Somebody is perpetrating one of the oldest and simplest rackets, but one of the hardest to catch up with - the faking of injury in hotel "accidents". Thirteen claims in thirteen different cities around the country have occurred in the past four months. The woman always slips and falls, apparently sustaining a badly sprained and swollen ankle. They are the same couple because they always give the same address - the corner of 21st Street and Fairmount Avenue, Philadelphia, which just happens to be Easton State Penitentiary. Johnny travels to Philadelphia and talks to the assistant warden, looking for a pattern of where the next city might be that they will hit. Sure enough, a Harry Bane was recently released from prison and in the past had committed crimes in each of the 13 cities so far struck, all of which he knew a crooked lawyer who lived there, but there are three cities that Bane has not hit yet - New Orleans, Little Rock and Duluth. Just then Fuller calls and says that Little Rock has been hit. Johnny makes calls to each of the hotels in New Orleans and Duluth, asking for a return call if a couple checks in with the 21st Street and Fairmount Avenue address. Johnny gets a return call from Hotel du Phillip manager Jacques Devereaux, saying that a Mr. and Mrs. Chatsworth have registered with the 21st Street and Fairmount Avenue address, but that they are "such nice people". Johnny flies to New Orleans where he pays the bellhop $5 to learn that the Chatsworths are in suite 214. When the bellhop won't let Johnny borrow his uniform for $10, Johnny knocks him out and ties him up in a broom closet. Dressed as the bellhop, Johnny gets a maid to open the Chatsworth's suite 214. In searching the room Johnny discovers something, but just then the Chatsworths are at the door so Dollar dives under the bed. They enter an place something on the wife's ankle. They tell the manager that they are going to sue the hotel for the wife's accident - and that they will be calling local lawyer Frankie Tabillo. Finally a $2000 cash settlement is offered. Johnny slips out from under the bed and hits them with the truth - the wife's swelling is the result of apply a jar containing three yellow jackets to her ankle. (Multi-Sponsored) (23:56)

I believe I've read all the Mike Shayne Mystery novels and have them still as a collection. Read a few as a teen. Started collecting them in the late 1980s at used book stores in towns that I would visited, then completed the collection via the web at Advanced Book Exchange.
