"Trying to restore 100Gb+ and the restore keeps dying, and support people hung up me and disconnected from Chat and are totally useless, and software disconnects from service during a restore (based on the log file) and installation gets corrupted and have to un-install and re-install all over again. I have have been trying to restore my data for 1 week straight with a partial success. I finally had to go and restore one sub-directory at a time and do two - three sub-directories until it gets corrupted and have to restart the whole process over! How can a company stay in business?????? Software is so bad!"

Screw Carbonite.
So wait a sec..are you saying it was OK when Rush flacked for Carbonite?
I sent them a message I will not renew my subscription, which is up in a few weeks.
Has anybody experience with Mozy?
By the way, for any noobs out there?
This thread is an example of “freeping”.
So the scumbag lefty rats want to boycott sponsors of a talk show host who only promotes traditional America and common decency?
Okay.
Why do you all waste your time and money to backup “in the cloud?”
Go out and buy a 2 TB external hard drive. Plug it into your computer. If you’re using Windows 7, set up a back up (Control Panel > Backup and Restore). If you’re using an Apple product, set up the time machine.
This keeps your personal information local to you and it doesn’t eat up your Internet bandwidth.
Sure I am. And I support Jamie Curtis flacking for yogurt, too. And Michael Jordan flacking for underwear, too. And Matthew Broderick flacking for a car company. Etc.
I’ve used Carbonite for several years and have used the restore process. The only problem I had was solved by re-installing the software.
The service works well. I’m canceling because of the reaction to Rush, not because their service doesnt work.
Yes, we have a 2 terabyte drive in the back and wirelesssly back up with Time Machine all day long. Makes more sense than relying on someone else.
Don’t forget to periodically archive your files onto some kind of hard media, such as DVD, then store those archives somewhere besides your house. This is in addition to your backup. You’ll probably never need the archives, but if a catastrophe strikes, you’ll be glad you made them.
So rush has for years pushed a substandard product that he was personally endorsing?
Give this outfit my files. BS I save them on two external drives and never lost anything. Sometimes I copy a file I just worked on to the externals or I use another software to do as an automatic feature. Check out Silverkeeper or I use Superduper to save the entire HD as a clone with the ability to boot. Works for my mac.
I used to use a seagate external 1TB mirrored drive for backups.
Then some disgruntled employee at seagate pushed out a firmware update. Turned it into a brick.
No solution is perfect and the cloud is very good at some things. These tools back files up as you make changes to them and don’t require you to do anything.

Who needs Carbonite?
I backup to a 2 TB disk on a ProFTPD NAS attached to my router which is then backed up to tape on my server. I’ve got my bases covered.
With 50 GB BDRs (BluRay Disks) available out there, you’re right, there’s no reason not to back up to media.
I’ve had no problem at all with Carbonite’s service. FWIW.
Apparently.
I have one of those seagate backup drives and it is stuck telling me my backup has failed. What a POS. I have to look for one that is infallible.

I tried to call this number from their site this morning and the phone was answered by a recording of some hot and wet girls. Freaked me out. I didn’t try again.
Mozy is better than carbonite but look at Crashplan or off line with your own hard drive.
Exactly.
I have a Western Digital external hard drive, plus I back up everything important on either discs or thumbs.
Screw all the companies that left. They did us a service by outing themselves. If they are stupid and leftist enough to dump Rush over a valid comment, however politically incorrect it is to simply call a slut a slut in the 21st century, then maybe we should have known this all along about these companies and not done business with them to begin with, advertising on Limbaugh or not.
They’re dead to me. I keep saying it, but it’s true. The body pile keeps building up. Bring out yer dead. Let us see the true colors. Don’t want to waste my ever decreasing money on lliberal companies I can live without using.
LOL
Apparently.
Sounds like he was treating his listeners like a bunch of saps then. I guess making more money was more important to him than maintaining his integrity.
Neither have I!
“Write-only backup” ... what a concept!

Ditto! Doing anything important over the internet is just plain nuts. Especially entrusting your data. Duh!
What is the big deal? Keep everything in a home directory and hang all subdirectories off of it. Then either burn it to a DVD or a large thumb drive.
System dies, restore O/S and patch it. Restore all applications and patch them, then copy your home directory and all subs back.
It’s much cleaner to install the O/S than to restore it if that is an option Carbonite offers.
You do have to have all of your software though, on DVDs preferably.
“Go out and buy a 2 TB external hard drive. Plug it into your computer. If youre using Windows 7, set up a back up (Control Panel > Backup and Restore).”
That is a good suggestion. And if you want to go cheaper, buy a USB storage device such as Sandisk Cruzer which costs $12-24 depending on capacity. It protects your data by using a password to access whatever is stored.
You can then use Window’s Explorer to backup files or use more sophisticated software. I use a program called EF-Commander since it shows me two panels of from and to folders or devices. It is a takeoff on the Norton Commander.
In my own case, very few important files change on a daily basis, so I backup mainly my MS-Money files. That is a life saver for me because of it’s ability to project cash flow months in future.
There is supposedly a fix for the firmware update but I’ve never been able to find it. I took the drive apart and extracted the secondary drive. It had not been corrupted and i was able to access the data on the drive.
I’m now also using amazon storage for some data. Its handy and is available whenever I travel.

It's amazing how many people don't even consider that happening.
How would you mitigate fire or theft if everything is local?
Actually, you’re doing the “flacking” with your post...Rush gets PAID for promoting products and services. I really don’t think he’s going to lose much sleep over losing Carbonite.
I’ve never understood the cost/benefit of Carbonite. For $70 I can buy a portable 500 gb HD and use it to back-up my computer. I don’t leave it plugged in but keep it in my fire-proof box.
How do you find Amazon storage?
Because I work with critical files every day. One lost file could easily be several thousand dollars worth of labor for me.
I don’t have to worry about forgetting to back them up. Its done for me and is one less thing to worry about.
BTW, your fire proof box probably isn’t going to protect your hard drive in case of a fire. The heat will melt the drive even if the fire doesn’t.
Bought an Acer notebook a couple of years ago and this crap was on the machine...first thing I did was flush it and send to where all crap goes.
I canceled Carbonite today. F em
You have to open an account with Amazon S3. http://aws.amazon.com/s3/
Not as easy as Carbonite but its cheap and unlimited.
no it was easy to ignore the ridiculous product. Now that they have called attention to themselves they are no longer worthy of being ignored.
With respect, you missed my point..I have no problem with Rush promoting anything he chooses, if they are willing to pay him...the thrust of this vanity is that Carbonite sucks, so that’s it no big deal if they pull their advertising....that is so inconsistent on so many levels.
My home did burn. My portable HD and all my data was in my briefcase.
I use and recommend Macrium Reflect. It's free. It's easy and it is fool proof protection against data loss and viral infections when used weekly.
“What happens if your house of office burns down?”
Since I can afford an x drive I also managed a small fireproof lockbox.
30 bucks at OD it was.
Of course North Korean commandos could steal it... oh darn.
Or a gamma ray burster could wipe out everyone on Earth-
Thanks
