Read Aldous Huxley’s review of 1984 he sent to George Orwell

Photobucket

Several months after George Orwell's dystopian classic 1984 was published in 1949, Aldous Huxley sent a letter to his former French pupil. The Brave New World author had received a copy of 1984 from the publisher at Orwell's behest, but his poor eyesight prevented him from finishing the book for several months.

In his letter to Orwell, the fifty-year-old author compared the two books' screwed-up futures and saw the Orwellian Oceanic dystopia as a predecessor to his own World State. Wrote Huxley in October 1949:

Agreeing with all that the critics have written of it, I need not tell you, yet once more, how fine and how profoundly important the book is. May I speak instead of the thing with which the book deals - the ultimate revolution? The first hints of a philosophy of the ultimate revolution - the revolution which lies beyond politics and economics, and which aims at total subversion of the individual's psychology and physiology - are to be found in the Marquis de Sade, who regarded himself as the continuator, the consummator, of Robespierre and Babeuf. The philosophy of the ruling minority in Nineteen Eighty-Four is a sadism which has been carried to its logical conclusion by going beyond sex and denying it. Whether in actual fact the policy of the boot-on-the-face can go on indefinitely seems doubtful. My own belief is that the ruling oligarchy will find less arduous and wasteful ways of governing and of satisfying its lust for power, and these ways will resemble those which I described in Brave New World. I have had occasion recently to look into the history of animal magnetism and hypnotism, and have been greatly struck by the way in which, for a hundred and fifty years, the world has refused to take serious cognizance of the discoveries of Mesner, Braid, Esdaile, and the rest.

Partly because of the prevailing materialism and partly because of prevailing respectability, nineteenth-century philosophers and men of science were not willing to investigate the odder facts of psychology for practical men, such as politicians, soldiers and policemen, to apply in the field of government. Thanks to the voluntary ignorance of our fathers, the advent of the ultimate revolution was delayed for five or six generations. Another lucky accident was Freud's inability to hypnotize successfully and his consequent disparagement of hypnotism. This delayed the general application of hypnotism to psychiatry for at least forty years. But now psycho-analysis is being combined with hypnosis; and hypnosis has been made easy and indefinitely extensible through the use of barbiturates, which induce a hypnoid and suggestible state in even the most recalcitrant subjects.

Within the next generation I believe that the world's rulers will discover that infant conditioning and narco-hypnosis are more efficient, as instruments of government, than clubs and prisons, and that the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging and kicking them into obedience. In other words, I feel that the nightmare of Nineteen Eighty-Four is destined to modulate into the nightmare of a world having more resemblance to that which I imagined in Brave New World. The change will be brought about as a result of a felt need for increased efficiency. Meanwhile, of course, there may be a large scale biological and atomic war - in which case we shall have nightmares of other and scarcely imaginable kinds.

Truly the cheerful correspondance. Who needs a game of Centrifugal Bumble-Puppy to raise their spirits?

Have either of you read Bezmenov?

“the ultimate revolution — the revolution which lies beyond politics and economics, and which aims at total subversion of the individual’s psychology and physiology”

This is an excellent letter. It is full of interesting observations about both Huxley's and Orwell's books. I have recently reread 1984. The plot is seems much more simplistic than I noticed before but the insights were remarkably astute. It helps to understand the Democrat Party in the Age of Obama.

Also interesting are Huxley's observation that the power hungry totalitarians were more flexible and innovative than Orwell thought.

Orwell based his observations on his relationships with members of the British Communist Party and British socialists who sponsored his writing career and arranged for his passage to Spain to participate in the Spanish Civil War. Huxley for saw a larger conspiracy.

Orwell saw they wanted to control the country and deprive citizens of their possessions, their freedom and their very souls. Huxley also saw they wanted to destroy men's souls but that their tactics would evolve.

They were both extremely insightful and prescient. Their work accurately predicted politics in America today.

Herbert London refutes White’s proposition by observing, “...if history is largely invention, who can say with authority that the American Revolution came before the French Revolution?” He observes that evidence has takmen a back seat to inventiveness. He thus cuts right to the chase — the inventions of postmodernism, which are cutting successive generations of Americans off from their culture and their history, evolved directly from the ‘cultural Marxist’ scholars of the Frankfurt School.
How did this situation come about in America’s universities? Gertrude Himmelfarb has observed [14] that it slipped past those traditional academics almost unobserved until it was too late. It occurred so ‘quietly’ that when they ‘looked up,’ postmodernism was upon them with a vengeance. “They were surrounded by a tidal wave of faddish multicultural subjects such as radical feminism, deconstructed relativism as history and other courses” which undermine the perpetuation of Western Civilization. “

There you are. I was in college in the early to mid 1970’s,
and I saw the transformation first hand. It was ugly then, now it is lost.

Thanks.

I’d come across him somewhere along the way but never read much. Thanks for the links.

Plenty true.

It’s just so dishearteningly mystifying to see it soooo

true even with Conservative Christians on FR.

The beginning od the downfall of America was the late 1960’s. All the virtuous, and traditional things we held dear were trashed.
The liberals in my jr. HS immediately picked up the leftist ball, and ran with it(1967-69). In senior HS, it grew “progressively” worse. By the time I graduated in 1972, the transition to leftism was almost complete.
From 1972-1976, I watched most of the young professors move decidedly to the left. By the late 1970’s those young leftist professors became “tenured radicals”. They eventually moved up in rank and power, and most often hired only their own......conservatives need not apply. By the mid 1980’s, the left had complete control of most universities. The “dumbing down” of America was at full throttle. Now in 2012, it is a near hopeless cause,as we have NO leadership on our side.

FR conservatives, these days I’m using the word hesitantly, generally receive all of their news and entertainment from the MSM. Therefore they are being fed misinformation and disinformation 24/7.

The debates on FR are always attempting to determine which category of these two the news article under discussion should be filed under. I laugh when people get angry at each other over such foolishness. Manure is still manure unless you are selling it then it becomes high grade fertilizer.

Self reliance is a new character trait that’s being worn by many people. It feels quite uncomfortable to say the least. This is a new lifestyle for many. They are continually glancing back to see what the crowd is doing, hoping they are in step. The closest similarity is unfortunately still a herd of sheep.

The change to becoming a sheep dog is a quite struggle. It requires casting aside many old beliefs and having to think for yourself. The once impossible thought such as brushing aside the media drivel about “death by natural causes” is then is replaced with the word “assassination” is a definite possibility, sometimes even a clear probability which goes 180 degrees against the grain of sheep thought patterns. Stepping outside the boundaries of four or five decades of social engineering is not an easy task because there are so many tentacles constantly attempting to pull you back into formation.

Critical thinking is another new sport for a healthy percentage. Unfortunately, sheep cannot do it. The worst thing for many is to be called a conspiracy freak by their ‘faceless internet friends’. “No, I am not a birther” was a cry heard frequently on FR. Yet Sheriff Arpaio has said that there is a 100% certainty the the Acting President’s LFBC is a fake. The moderators on FR wish the issue would fade away. They were hoping that removing the Breaking News sidebar would do the trick. Nope, like psoriasis it will keep showing up until the cause of the bacteria is discovered and removed.

My time frame is close to yours; you are correct. I was fortunate to go to non-public grade and high schools that were way behind the times in what and how they taught. In college I was a science major, and science hadn't been infiltrated . . . yet. Now in NJ the state college of medicine BOASTS of an Office of Diversity!

I remember that Propaganda Analysis was a required course to graduate so that we would understand how we were being lied to. Readers Digest was part of the reading material.

It is worthy to note that that course is no longer required now that the left is in charge.

ABSOLUTELY INDEED.

VERY WELL PUT.

SIGH.

The first section of quotes below is from my usual link.

Below that is another link and some newer-to-FR quotes . . . including, I hope, soon, a Bertrand Russell quote I’ve been looking for again . . . about mass psychology etc.

Didn’t yet find the Bertrand Russell quote. Basically, he said that mass psychology would manipulate the sheeple into doing what the controllers wanted fairly painlessly. The sheeple have proven him too right.

http://twoday.net/static/omega/files/quotes_from_people_who_consider_us_subjects.htm

95.”Psychopolitics is an important if less known division of geo-politics. It is less known because it must necessarily deal with “mental healing.” “By Psychopolitics our chief goals are carried forward. To produce a maximum of chaos in the culture of the enemy is our first most important step.” “Our fruits are grown in chaos, distrust, economic depression, and scientific turmoil. At last a weary populace can seek peace only in our offered Communist State; at last only Communism can resolve the problem of the masses.” Laventi Beria Stalin’s chief of security Speech at V. I. Lenin University

132.”Military men are dumb, stupid animals to be used as pawns for foreign policy.” Henry Kissinger, quoted by Bob Woodward in The Final Days, 1976

133.”The illegal we do immediately. The unconstitutional takes a little longer.” Henry Kissinger

11. “The drive of the Rockefellers and their allies is to create a one-world government combining supercapitalism and Communism under the same tent, all under their control.... Do I mean conspiracy? Yes I do. I am convinced there is such a plot, international in scope, generations old in planning, and incredibly evil in intent.” Congressman Larry P. McDonald, 1976, killed in the Korean Airlines 747 that was shot down by the Soviets.

22. “In March, 1915, the J.P. Morgan interests, the steel, shipbuilding, and powder interest, and their subsidiary organizations, got together 12 men high up in the newspaper world and employed them to select the most influential newspapers in the United States and sufficient number of them to control generally the policy of the daily press....They found it was only necessary to purchase the control of 25 of the greatest papers. “An agreement was reached; the policy of the papers was bought, to be paid for by the month; an editor was furnished for each paper to properly supervise and edit information regarding the questions of preparedness, militarism, financial policies, and other things of national and international nature considered vital to the interests of the purchasers.” U.S. Congressman Oscar Callaway, 1917

33.”For a long time I felt that FDR had developed many thoughts and ideas that were his own to benefit this country, the United States. But, he didn’t. Most of his thoughts, his political ammunition, as it were, were carefully manufactured for him in advanced by the Council on Foreign Relations-One World Money group. Brilliantly, with great gusto, like a fine piece of artillery, he exploded that prepared “ammunition” in the middle of an unsuspecting target, the American people, and thus paid off and returned his internationalist political support.
“The UN is but a long-range, international banking apparatus clearly set up for financial and economic profit by a small group of powerful One-World revolutionaries, hungry for profit and power. “The depression was the calculated ‘shearing’ of the public by the World Money powers, triggered by the planned sudden shortage of supply of call money in the New York money market....The One World Government leaders and their ever close bankers have now acquired full control of the money and credit machinery of the U.S. via the creation of the privately owned Federal Reserve Bank.” Curtis Dall, FDR’s son-in-law as quoted in his book, My Exploited Father-in-Law

79. “There is... a power which we seldom mention in this House. ..... They do not want constitutional government; they do not want ameliorated institutions... they want to change the tenure of land, to drive out the present owners of the soil and put an end to ecclesiastical establishments... Benjamin Disraeli Bristish Prime Minister July 14, 1856 speech in the House of Commons

87.Lucis Trust NGO officially recognized by the UN, incorporated in 1924 as Lucifer Publishing, identifies Lucifer as the “Solar Logos” (logos - greek for “spirit”) World Goodwill. sister organization

94.”The Masters are working according to a Plan... which will demonstrate a large measure of world unity... marked by universality... “The Plan is concerned with re-building mankind... As human beings begin to take the higher initiations... the true nature of the divine Will [she means satan’s will] will be grasped...” Alice Bailey 24 books published by Lucis Trust The Beacon Sept-Oct 1975 pp. 145-148

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

1928: H.G. Wells authored The Open Conspiracy: Blue Prints for a World Revolution. By then he had broken with the Fabians, not in terms of their goals, but only in believing that they should be open about their plan to synthesize western capitalism with eastern communism, and create a world socialist government. In a later book titled The New World Order, Wells said that many would die protesting against it.[26] In the same year as The Open Conspiracy was published, H.G. Wells received a letter from Bertrand Russell congratulating him, and saying:

“(Lord R.B.) Haldane (FS) would not forego the pleasure to be derived from the next war.”[27]

Bertrand Russell would later write that a “Black Death” or bacteriological warfare might be needed to cull the population.[28] Wells had already written that ‘they would have a cause that “would make killing worth the while.”[29]

In his book, A New Deal, future New Deal Resettlement Administration and UNESCO, consultant Stuart Chase wrote: “A better economic order is worth a little bloodshed.” Stuart Chase advocated joining H.G. Wells’ “Open Conspiracy.”[30]

1928: John Dewey wrote an article for the December 5 issue of The New Republic magazine in which he noted that the Bolsheviks were engaged in:

“’...a most interesting sociological experiment,’ ... and using progressive educational ideas and practices to ‘...counteract and transform... the influence of home and Church.’”[31]

The following year, in his book, Individualism, Old and New, Dewey predicted: “We are in for some kind of socialism, call it by whatever name we please.”[32]

1928: When William Paley (CFR) was beginning CBS, his chief advisor was Sigmund Freud’s nephew, Edward Bernays, who authored the book, Propaganda, in which he revealed:

“Those who manipulate the organized habits and opinions of the masses constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of the country.”[34]

1933: On April 11, Max Mason, president of the Rockefeller Foundation, assured his trustees that in their program:

“The Social Sciences will concern themselves with the rationalization of social control , ... the control of human behavior.”[35]

Four years later, the foundation gave a grant to Princeton University to study the influence of radio on different groups, and Rockefeller’s General Education Board funded a study of CBS’s 1938 broadcast of War of the Worlds, which was written up later as a ‘study in the psychology of panic.’”[36]
