Reagan Was A Sure ZOT Too

William McGurn is his usual magnificent self today.

[quote] Not since Herbert Hoover has a party out of power had such an opportunity to run against everything that troubles the American family—prices, interest rates, unemployment, taxes, or the fear for the future of their old age or the future of their children—than is now presented to the Republican Party.

The Republicans, however, haven't figured this out. This is their basic problem. They have no strategy for defeating an Obama administration that is highly vulnerable on both domestic and foreign policy. [end quote]

Those words were written by Scotty Reston in a New York Times column published on February 29, 1980 about President Jimmy Carter's good fortune, rather than President Obama's, to be facing such a pack stumblebums. We all know how Reston's prognostications turned out.

Nothing has changed. To listen to the media, the Republicans are always stupid and confused, bumbling and inept, obtuse and unelectable.

It's funny how only Republicans palatable to the New York Times lose Presidential elections. You'd think the public would wise up to the ruse.

[quote] Then as now, the chattering classes wondered aloud whether a candidate who could win the Republican nomination could prevail against President Carter in November. On March 1, former President Gerald Ford amplified that view when he told a New York Times reporter, "Every place I go and everything I hear, there is the growing, growing sentiment that Governor Reagan cannot win the election." [end quote]

Can it be long before John McCain, the New York Times preferred Republican candidate in 2008, presents himself for nomination at the convention? Too bad for the Times that Gerald Ford is no longer available to provide sound bites.

Especially of note is what McGurn implies about the standard for Republican candidates: perfection.

[quote] Nor was candidate Reagan without baggage. As governor, Reagan had pushed through the largest tax hike in California's history, had signed one of the nation's most liberal abortion laws, and—as George H.W. Bush pointed out—presided over the doubling of the state budget over his eight-year tenure, to $10.2 billion when he left office from $4.6 billion when he entered. [end quote]

Mitt, Rick, Newt and Ron are imperfect, too, just like Dutch. Get over it.

They can grow. And, unlike our current President, they won't unilaterally pass any trillion dollar entitlements; balloon the size and scope of government; redistribute red state tax revenues to fill blue state budget holes; disarm the nation; abandon space to America's rivals; kill off feasible energy projects that would make America independent of hostile forces; shackle the economy with taxes and regulation; trample on American's religious liberties in the name of women's health and other shibboleths, etc.

[quote] [Reagan] would face Santorum-like fears about his social message, especially after appearing at a mass gathering of Christian fundamentalists and evangelicals. A minister with whom he'd shared a stage was taped saying "we're being attacked by satanic forces," which Times columnist Anthony Lewis declared "the scariest piece of television" he'd seen in some time.

Yes, the parallels to 1980 take you only so far, and Mitt Romney is no Ronald Reagan. Still, at this same point in his campaign for the GOP nomination, neither was Reagan. The President Reagan we rightly admire for bringing down the Berlin Wall, reviving the U.S. economy, and attracting into the GOP millions of disaffected Democrats was still to come.

And he got there by transcending the conventional wisdom rather than allowing himself or his message to be limited by it. [end quote]

That just about says it all. Whoever the eventual candidate is, as President he will have to surmount daily attacks from the mainstream media, just as Reagan did, and probably die before garnering any recognition for saving America from bankruptcy and national decline.

It's a tough job, but somebody's got to do it. Any of the Republican candidates are sufficiently suited to the task of saving the nation from today's vulnerable administration.

Is that why people choose WordPress?

I didn’t know about the MySpace connection. MySpace means Charlie Sheehan’s Anthony Weiner to me.

I’m glad to live in a world that allows everyone to publicize their ideas. In case you hadn’t noticed, the other side controls most of the mainstream outlets. You’ve got to begin somewhere.

I’ll just have to distinguish myself from the smacktard set by the quality of my writing. I’m glad that some people like it.

I’m also glad that of the 2,000+ hits I get per month (humble, I know), 40% of them come from overseas and places that are so remote as to make me shake my head in wonderment. It may be too late to influence America, even FR. But, I can warn people in other countries not to make our mistakes.

If you have some constructive advice about how to distinguish my blog, I’m happy to listen. I like learning, even from non-educators.

Good luck. Writing a blog does little toward that end in my opinion.

I’m glad to live in a world that allows everyone to publicize their ideas.

Me too. You'll note I do so right here on Free Republic.
The traffic on FR exceeds that of your average blog by about 687,535,044.08%

If you have some constructive advice about how to distinguish my blog, I’m happy to listen.

Ditch the blog. Write on FR. Don't re-direct traffic offsite.
What the hell is the re-direct for? People are reading HERE.

“Write on FR.”

Do you mean vanity posts? Is there some other way?

Do you mean vanity posts?

Editorials under your own name.

Guaranteed more exposure than any blog post.

Link back to a blog if you have that sort of perversion, but there is no need to excerpt your own material.

Eaker, drop dead.

I normally try to steer clear of thread such as this but your wishing death on a Conservative stalwart here at Free Republic is over the line. I fully realize that "drop dead" is an idiom like "go jump in a lake" but this comes very close to a personal attack.

Eaker, being a good soul and a good sport, may just readily dismiss this. But, if nothing else, telling a FReeper to "drop dead" reflects very poorly on you. That's not much of a surprise since you can evidently tolerate the unabashed liberalism of Mitt Romney.

I also normally try to steer clear of threads such as this, and am usually successful.

Eaker was unusally obtuse, hence the finale. Drop dead is my way of saying that I’ve had enough of his sanctimonious crap, and don’t wish to hear from him anymore. I’m not wishing him dead; I’m wishing him to go away.

I didn’t start there. I ended there after giving him chances to back off and try a different approach. He may be a wonderful fellow. But, I wouldn’t know it because he jumped down my throat from my first introduction to him, and hasn’t stopped accusing me of being what I’m not since then.

He is not a reasonable fellow, and seems capable of neither learning nor explaining himself like an intelligent man. If he’s a conservative stalwart, we’re in big trouble. And, by we, I mean conservatives. He’s behaved like a yahoo, and written like a monkey. I don’t have time to swing on a vine with him or his fellow apes. I’d rather read Curious George to my children.

Your post reeks of liberal hyper-sensitivity, and reminds me of far too many lefties whose response to something they don’t like is “I’m offended.” (I read it to my wife in the voice of Major Cassius Starbuckle from The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence.) As you know from my handle, I’m sick of lefties.

Quoting from The Sweet Smell of Success, “You’re dead son. Go get yourself buried.” My apologies if that offends you.

As you know from my handle, I’m sick of lefties.

And it appears that Free Republic is sick of you and your support of the lefty in the GOP field, Mitt Romney. Really now, wishing good FReepers and Constitutional Conservatives dead is never a good idea.

I won’t be voting for Bishop Romney.

- - - -
Beyond being just a ‘Bishop’, the man thinks he is a “High Priest after the order of Melchizedek” which means he thinks he is on the same par as Christ.

And, to any nasayers, I can source that.

“What does Mitt Romney stand for?”

Beats me, I was hoping you knew.

But hey, give it some time! He’s only been running for President, for what, five years ? I mean, really, who could come up with a coherent message in just five measly years ? /sarc

“Any of the Republican candidates are sufficiently suited to the task of saving the nation from today’s vulnerable administration.”

Jew hater Ron Paul can’t.

Mitt Trotsky WON’T.

Newt Gingrich WILL, by having an IQ that would make Carl Sagan jealous. Even if the good guys don’t take the Imperial Senate, Newt would still be a great president.

Rick Santorum can, with a good staff around him, and with a Republican leadership that doesn’t include Boehner and McConman.
