Do Mormons serve in the Military?

Posted on 03/10/2012 9:48:43 PM PST by 3boysdad

Just curious. I'm sure they do. I served for over 5 years and don't remember encountering any Mormons in the time I served.

I personally know and know of several Mormons who have served in the armed forces of the USA. They are very patriotic people in general.

A quick google seems to indicate that they make up about 1.5% of the military, while comprising 1.7% of the general population.

Yes. Many Mormons serve in the military, all branches. Here’s a few more well known ones.

Some do. Many don’t. Most of the Mormons I knew in the military were either converts while in the military or ‘jack mormons’ not active ones. A big part of this is because the average age of joining the Military is 18-22 and active Mormon men are expected to serve an LDS mission from the ages of 19-21.

I have yet to personally meet a Mormon who joined the military after serving his LDS mission. However, I have pinged an ex-mo who might have some insight and 2 never Mormons who were in the Air Force for many years.

Yeah, but are they ‘active’ Temple Mormons? Probably not.

Statistically, there were increases in Mormon men serving Missions during WWII and Vietnam since they could get draft exemptions. That is what Romney did. Anything to avoid the draft.

Did you read the list? Some of these guys are General Authorities and High Councilmen. I’m not sure where you’re trying to go with this, but it’s way off base.

My father was a very active temple Mormon, and he was active duty.

There were 2 mormons in my Army unit, one did not seem very serious about it, the other found Jesus, married a cajun girl and joined a Baptist church. My impression is that for every active mormon there is at least one former LDS. I go to an evangelical church in Colorado, and we have several former mormons in our congregation.

I had a Mormon Army buddy in Viet Nam. He was a great guy and at the time was quite a partier or “Jack” Mormon.

Thanks to your brother for his service!

Also, the LDS Church has an ongoing program to help it’s members serving in the military. There’s even a program for LDS military chaplains. A few resources here:

Yes they do. I'm wont vote for Romney but any question about Mormon's ib the military is pure bullsh3T.
Utah the most heavily populated Mormon state sends has more folks serving, like the other intermountain states, than any other region outside of the south..

In the case of my brother, he served a mission, then went to BYU and was involved in an ROTC program there, then he joined the Navy as a junior officer, eventually being promoted to Captain, his current rank. I’m not a ‘temple Mormon,’ but he still is.

I also seem to recall a comment from Willard about his boys that their serving as part of his campaign was equivalent to military service.

I am an active “temple Mormon” I served in the Army
from 1958 to 1961. I was in Germany for two years.

I have a son who served a mission and has been in the Air Force for 20 years. He is an “Active Temple Mormon”.

He served one tour in Kuwait and two tours in Iraq as a
Weapons Director. He also served two tours in Korea.

He just returned from Korea.

Many of the General Authorities in the Church have a Military background.

My family has had 8 members serve in the military from WWII, Korea, the Cold War and Vietnam. They were my Brothers and a Sister.

My experience as well. I think it is telling given that this country was not founded on mormonism. I'm sure there have been mormons that have served, but I doubt the ratio even compares on an equivalent basis to the descendants of Christian founders of this once great country.
