Boulder arrives at Los Angeles museum

LOS ANGELES, -- Residents say the newest acquisition by Los Angeles County Museum enjoyed a rock star reception early Saturday morning as the 340-ton boulder rolled into town.

The rock arrived at 4:30 a.m. aboard its 176-wheel transport truck to a crowd of admirers armed with cellphone cameras and noisemakers. The behemoth boulder will be the centerpiece of the art museum's new outdoor installation entitled "Levitated Mass," the Los Angeles Times reported.

When the transport truck broke down for 30 minutes, onlookers jumped at the chance to touch the rock, pressing palms to its protective plastic wrap.

"I came a long way to touch this thing, and it felt very impersonal -- I expected more intimacy from this rock," said M.M. Green, who later used his keys to slash an opening in the plastic wrap. After poking his fingers through the hole, Green smiled. "I'm having chills, if that means anything," he said. "I'm going back for seconds."

LOOK! We have to do SOMETHING with all that money we’re borrowing from China. Why not truck a rock that everyone can worship?

“Why would you put protective plastic around a rock?”

So it doesn’t get wet and melt.

Since when do rocks need "protective plastic wrap"?

This was done in an effort to keep drool and bodily fluids from contaminating the rock, until it could be placed behind bullet resistant glass at the museum.

Apaches and Indians from other tribes in the Riverside area, chanted and performed tribal rituals prior the rocks journey to the museum. Originally the rock was scheduled to arrive at the museum during a full moon. But local tribes protested, stating that would bring bad mumbo upon their people.

Once at the Museum, local Latino leaders demanded the rock be named, Viva El Roca and several gang members attempted spay paint the name on the rock, but were held back by police in riot gear.

Several African American groups were also on hand, to protest and were angry because the rock lacked color, and felt this was offensive to the black community.

Oh MAN! Thanks!

I’ll download it tonight when I get home from work. Last time I saw it I was probably 12...I’m 57 now.

Other great SF movies from the past there as well.

You can buy fake rocks for your garden, I have 2, same color but a little smaller only 40 dollars each...One that size would probably run about 800 dollars...and it does’t take a truck that size to get it home....

I had to drive up to Long Beach the other day on business.

I got off the 405 heading North on Atlantic and the traffic was backed for a mile. Looking ahead I saw a sign that said Left Lane Closed. After sitting there for about 15 minutes wasting precious Fossil Fuel, I was able to get off Atlantic on to a side street.

When I reached my destination, I asked the Business owner what was going on. She then told me about the famous Rock and how it was a big sensation. She had no idea why it was famous, it just was, just like Sandra Fluke.

The Rock added 45 minutes to my travel time in addition to wasting my gas. They should have just put a rock shaped like a Crucifix in a glass jar full of urine and been done with it. The fun never ends here in Crazyfornia.

USA TODAY: Upon arrive at the Los Angeles Museum, several in the crowd claimed they heard the rock speak. This provoked the crowd to immediate start chanting back. Several attempted to cross the barriers, but were stopped by police.

You could easily spend a rainy weekend watching all the movies associated there. I know I have. I’m 54, so grew up watching these on Fridays & Saturdays (Chiller Theater on Channel 11 and Creature Features on Channel 5 here in the NYC broadcast area).

Since when do rocks need "protective plastic wrap"?

Since nobody wants to deal with clamshell packaging.
