Ranch hands tried to run over starving dog for fun
Examiner.com ^ | March 7, 2012 | Penny Eims

Southern California - Meet Hank - a dog who was abandoned, left to fend for himself and then subjected to abuse by people who should have tried to help, rather than inflict harm.

Hank found himself alone on a ranch in Southern California several months ago.

Some of the workers at the ranch looked to the woebegone dog as a source of entertainment. How, one might wonder, could a stray dog in need of help provide entertainment?

To the individuals who are lacking of a conscience - apparently lacking of a soul - that entertainment came in the form of their vehicles and his body.

According to the woman who rescued Hank, the bored ranch hands would spend their spare time each night by trying to run Hank over with their trucks.

It is impossible to know the fear that Hank felt on those nights - running for his life from crazy people behind the wheel of deadly machinery.

Without a doubt, those moments he survived were filled with sheer terror.

Prediction: The "ranch hands" are illegal immigrants. I wonder how they'd like the same "game"?

Probably true, but regardless, eye for an eye justice would be poetic justice here.

I’d sure like to know what ranch this was and which ranch hands, so I can take up overwatch and have a little entertainment of my own.

We need to find out who owns that ranch and ask them what they think of their employees choice of entertainment.

If I were the ranch owner, they would have been fired the first time. How could I trust them around my animals, knowing what they did for “fun”?

Stake those “ranch hands” down to the ground and take a John Deere over them... repeatedly.

People who abandon their dogs make me sick. Living in a rural area I see it all the time. The poor animals wander and either get hit by cars, starve, or shot. Rarely is there a happy ending for them.

Back in 1987, we found a very young pup abandoned at a rest stop near Goliad, Texas. He was cowering under a bench at the time... we took him back with us to San Antonio, and fairly quickly found a home for him (a co-worker). He appeared to be a Doberman/Great Dane mix... he grew to a huge size and turned out to be a wonderful pet for my co-worker's kids. Sweetest temperament and never heard him bark once.

The ranch owner should simply make these workers disappear. They are in charge of the animals that the ranch depends on. Killing of a dog for no good reason should not pass. What is wrong with people these days?

Wouldn’t bother me to see them drop over a a deep ravine into a pile of barbed wire large enough to fill the deck of a barge....on a hot summer day.

I’d like to suggest a “game”, if you don’t mind.

It's because people are 1. Cruel and don't care or 2. Incredibly stupid.

People think that they can release an animal into the wild (domesticated dog or a house cat) and it'll be just fine, because it's an animal, right?

I was talking to a lady a few months ago and she told me that when her family moved, they couldn't take their beloved cat, so they dropped the cat off at the shelter.

She was shocked when I informed her that shelters can hold an animal for only a very short time before they are put down.

Well, yeah, but Odhinn would likely feel left out (no opposable thumbs) if we implemented that plan.

I prefer observing canine sensitivity to cultural sensitivity.

How so?

The battered pieces are gonna hit the ground eventually and he’s not fussy about a little dirt on his meat.

[you’re forgetting he could jump up and tear his own chunks off, too...that dog sure likes playing “grab and shred”]

I just had a conversation with a Texan of Mexican descent. We were talking about sick and injured dogs because he had asked for the phone number of my vet. He was telling me how things are done in Mexico and the stories weren’t pretty. Some of those people are cruel and heartless.

I am in a rural area as well. In the last three weeks a mama dog and her 4 pups dropped off AND in a separate incident 3 more pups from another litter. That is a lot of dogs to feed, although three of us are taking care of them (in addition to our own dogs), that’s lots of kibble. One of my silver tongued neighbors is going to the vet in town and wheedle a deal for shots and worming. And maybe throw in a discount spay deal for the mama dog.

Hopefully that will make them a tad more adoptable. They are all pretty good looking pups, but there are no vacancies at the no-kill shelter for that many dogs.

I hate people that dump out pets, for whatever reason.

The people (and I use that term loosely) in the original story best hope that there is no truth in the old adage...you reap what you sow.

Two of my three dogs I have now have been “drop offs” from people that think their pets will be taken in if they just dump them out in “the country.” It breaks my heart every time I see a new one. And there have been more the past couple of years. I think it's because the economy is so bad but that's just my opinion.

Exactly. Real ranch hands treat animals properly.

Illegal immigrants care no more about animal cruelty law than they do immigration law.
