Train kills reindeer 'like meat grinder': farmer [Swedish high-speed rail]
The Local [Sweden] ^ | 12 Mar 2012 | unattributed

A new high-speed railway in northern Sweden has already claimed the lives of 200 reindeer since it opened three months ago, forcing the farm owner to move to safer pastures.

The train line, which runs between Umeå and Lycksele, has been responsible for the deaths of hundreds of reindeer over the last three months, when the unfortunate animals have wandered onto the tracks.

Finding a dead reindeer or one that is injured and needs to be euthanized is a daily occurrence for reindeer owner, Per-Mikael Jonsson, who is forced to put down many injured reindeer fearing that their internal damages may be too severe to survive.

“It’s been the worst winter I’ve experienced in the whole of my life when it comes to reindeer getting hit by trains,” he told SVT.

Jonsson, who is the chairman of the Rans community, has brought up the issue with the train service, Botniatåg AB, but his pleas have fallen on deaf ears.

“This year, they’ve provided a shuttle service from Lycksele and increased the speed of the train so it’s like having a meat grinder that goes past,” Jonsson said to SVT.

As a result, Jonsson is moving the herd further into the mountains early to avoid the perilous rail roads.

Meanwhile, spokespeople for the train company state that they have no intention of changing the service. They currently pay 3,000 kronor ($441) for each reindeer hit; however this is not good enough for Jonsson.

“For my family, this is about a couple hundred thousand kronor that we must go without. We can’t afford to keep sacrificing the herd to the train traffic,” he said.

Herd about a hundred of them onto the track and see who wins.

Fence in the track?

Nope. That would block the migration route for... reindeer.

The braintrust that is the Nevada office of the BLM made tunnels for longhorn sheep to cross a busy route near Hoover dam. Spent millions.

You can guess the result.

What’s the big deal? I rode MARC in the DC area for over ten years. We bagged our share of deer on the tracks! In fact, one morning the deer got even. It managed to uncouple two cars and put us in the dark, without A/C!

If fact, the rode by NIST in Rockville, MD, has one of the highest deer kills rates, anywhere. Got so bad they talked about birth control measures to reduce the deer population!

They work for me! I've hit two deer in the last 15 years -- both times when I'd bought new vehicles and forgot to put the whistles on. Many times, I've been driving and have seen deer running across a pasture toward the highway, only to see them stop, look towards me, and run back the other way.

As an aside, down here in the country we've always called them deer horns. I was working in downtown Rochester in the late '90's and mentioned that I was putting deer horns on my new F-150. My co-workers were horrified and I couldn't imagine why. Till I realized they thought I was talking about antlers.

The system currently used for deciding where reindeer go was imposed on the Sa'ami about two centuries ago.

There's no room in it for trains ~ not even high speed trains.

Best bet is for the Norse to go back home ~ North Africa perhaps? Some place.

You are talking about a very urbanized area ~ where these fellows herd reindeer there are few people.

The fact the Norse felt it necessary to put a highspeed train through the region means they are not yet done forcing the Sa'ami off their land.

The idea is so terribly transparent you can see the hate boiling through.

Yes, fencing railroad track and roads works fine. All you have to do is build wildlife corridors (underpasses & overpasses) in conjunction with the tracks and roads.

I was in the passenger seat of a Buick Grand National that hit a deer going about 60-70ish. It was real pretty...in my lap...with pieces of windshield, plastic...

And lots of interesting primary colors. Red for instance. Antlered rats are the bane of the highway.

Tell Me about it. I live in a rural area that grows nothing but sugar beets and soybeans. I am constantly dodging bambi's extended family during certain times of the year.

When I lived in upstate NY a friend of mine had hit so many over the years that he built a square tube steel baja style bumper. Not a week later he got to try it out. Worked great and no more bodywork bills.

The greenie anti hunters never talk about how many people get maimed/killed by “deerstrike”. There was one woman who lived way out of town at an intersection of 2 highways. No one around but her and she’s feed them to have something to look at. That area had dozens of deer crashes a year. The Troopers kept threatening her with fines/legal action until the greenies got involved. You can also imagine the result of that too.

You’d have a hard time convincing anyone that the line between Martinsburg and Rockville is urban!
