Washington Co. man loses $400 through online dating scheme

NORTH STRABANE, Pa. -- A Washington County man fell victim to an online dating scam and lost almost $400.

According to police, the victim thought he was talking with a woman in Nashville, Tenn., on the online dating website Lust.com.

The 42-year-old man told police they arranged to meet in Pittsburgh, but she needed him to send her money through Western Union to pay for the flight. Police said the man sent the woman money, but she never showed up.

“It’s never a good idea to send any funds via Western Union to anybody you don’t know personally,” North Strabane Police Officer Jonathan Miles said. “This type of thing doesn’t surprise me. Like Craigslist, people can be anonymous online and use it to their advantage to lure people into this false sense of security.”

According to the criminal complaint, the man wired money several times through Western Union, ultimately sending almost $400.

North Strabane Police said they’ve handled one online dating scheme that was worse. A local woman sent over $5,000 to a man online.

I’m sorry to hear that. Hopefully he is imprisoned now for his crimes against you and other Freepers.

I’m guessing he wanted more than a date with a website named lust.com. Just a hunch.

He did get screwed so what more does he want?

No, I don’t think he is but we do know his real name and where he lives but lifes to short for that kind of drama. He’s a thief and he knows it but he was a thief by trust, that makes it tenfold worse IMHO.

He should feel lucky. In my home town, a guy went only to hire prostitutes, who told him to meet them at a local gas station not far from my house. He did, and they told him to drive them to a secluded cul-de-sac, where a male accomplice then beat the guy up and robbed him.

When you can’t trust online hookers, who can you trust?

I got a similar e-mail last week from an acquaintance. She wrote that she was stranded in Scotland after an armed robber stole her cash and credit cards, and that she needed money so she could buy a ticket to New York and from there return to California. She asked that we send money to her e-mail address.

I almost responded to the message to ask for more details—she didn’t include a phone number, say where in Scotland she was or give the name of the hotel where she was staying. And I wondered why she didn’t contact her bank or credit card company or the tour company that she must have been with. Furthermore, I wondered why she wanted to fly to New York, when her home is in California. I’m pretty sure one can fly there from Scotland. My suspicions got the better of me, and I didn’t respond.

It’s a good thing I didn’t. The woman had never left her home 5,000+ miles southwest of Scotland. The e-mail address had apparently been jacked.

That’s a shame. He could have almost filled his gas tank with that.

Sending $400 to a stranger he met on a website called lust.com? As a friend of mine would say, “He was thinking with the wrong head”.

Knew a woman like that. Couldn't understand why all the guys she met online were complete losers. Then I found out she was using hornymatch.com as a dating service.

Maybe he made the mistake of sending his picture along with the money.

Sad but there are so desperate people due to Obama’s economy. I am not condoning the woman but these things have double and tripled since Obama becoming President.

OH PLEASE!

Look - Obama, and his administration, have done man, MANY things to screw up this country, but you cannot blame him for stuff like this any more than Bush can be blamed for the same thing 4 years ago. A dumb guy thinking with his woodrow getting taken for $ has been going on for-EVER.

I went with a bunch of coworkers recently to a Hooters for beer and wings. It was my first visit to one. No, it really was. And after all this time I feel awful now knowing what I haven't been missing. The server was making suggestive comments throughout our time there, and some of this crap is actually built into the menu: "So, you want your wings hot and naked?". At one point, as she took an order at our tall table, she pressed herself against my arm (My tricep was unable to determine if the prevailing method is gaffer's tape or push-up) but she was completely aware of the point her point was making.

I am sure these women pull in a good dollar hustling drinks and nothing special overpriced food. I was amused by the pandering; a lot of men are smart enough to know she just wants a big tip. But many men are stupid enough to think she wants theirs. This guy is doubly stupid because after he got what he was trying to get (just not the way he expected) he managed to get himself into the news.

Bottom line is that it hasn't got a damn thing to do with the economy. Or am I mistaken to think that tacky women and dorky guys filling up the average Hooters is not Obama's fault?

I don’t see the problem here.

What would it cost him to get married? Lots more than 400 bucks.

I bet Officer Miles' secret identity IS Captain Obvious.
