Using my iPad 1 here, obtained 30 minutes after 3G went on sale. Improved speed and resolution would be nice, and some apps just don’t run on this (iPhoto, iMovie) but on the whole it’s still very satisfactory. Unlimited 3G rocks; not abusing it, just never have to worry about it. Need a new computer far more than an iPad upgrade. Will replace a 7 year old 1.7 GHz Pentium M 0.5GB Sony ultraportable with the next top end iMac when it shows up.

Hi! Just curious — which one were you FReeping on when you posted #23?

So far, that’s what I”m doing, using the Macbook for things like this. I don’t know at my age if I really want to retrain myself to type on the ipad keys for real typing. The laptop has already made a negative difference in my typing speed, I think.
But, we’ll see, I’m really enjoying the Ipad.

Macbook. I have not ventured onto FR with my IPad. For one thing I would have to find my password... ;)

I know a few early adopters of the new one, if no anecdotal evidence, I won’t post anything else. :’)

Thank you. Aside from portability for archaeological field research, I haven’t yet seen justification to supplant my 17” MacBook Pro with an iPad. If I were younger, and more “portable”, ‘-) myself, I might think otherwise... And, if they ever come up with a 17” Retina Display for the MBP, I might be even less tempted... ;-}

I got my new iPad from FedEx on the 16th. It’s the first time I ever pre-ordered anything electronic.

I have already used it extensively in portrait mode reading ebooks and in landscape watching video and playing games. I’ve had lots of time, since I’m between jobs right now. Haven’t noticed any hot spots, other than that hot new Retina screen.

They updated iMovie; it now plays on the iPad!!

It’s slow and rather clunky, but I did the hotspot thing and was able to download it to my iPad 1 last week. Version 1.3, I believe. I then pulled some videos I had on the iPad and made a 60 second travelogue with music and themes. Absolutely wonderful.

Now, I am saving for the Mac Mini refurb ($510) then $39 at Amazon to upgrade to 8 GB; that will be my new home desktop. Windows may be moving to Win8; but that train is going to leave without me, I’m stepping over to the Mac side of the street.

Huh. Just checked & tried, no such luck. Insists on a front-facing camera.

iMovie won’t install on your iPad1? Ok, now I’m confused. iPad1 has no camera at all, I know the original iMovie wouldn’t install. I’m running iOS 5.1 on a never-jailbroken iPad1 64 GB Wi-Fi only.

Downloaded iMovie 1.3 on it last week, installed without any protests.

I know iPhoto won’t work on it, yet.

Same configuration, different results. Maybe you caught a short window where the restrictions were looser while they were adjusted to include iPad gen3. Alas...

One thing I did months ago, was use an Apple Configuration Tool to tell the iPad to load iMovie. That was before iOS5 came out - it didn’t work then.

But, magically it loaded just fine last week. I do feel sorry for you, and I really don’t understand the blatant stupidity of Apple for refusing to let a user give them money to buy an app - that will motivate them to buy a Mac Mini to get the full-feature iMovie to complete and compliment the iPad.

I mean, does Apple really expect us to believe that everyone uses the iPad2/3 camera to shoot every photo/video; then edit and manipulate the files on the iPad? Heck, I’d wager a month’s paycheck that the video’s they show at he Demo were shot on professional video/cameras and then TRANSFERRED to the iPad2/3 - just like we do with the origional iPad.

This is a part that really chaps me off a bit. The iPad1 is barely 2 years old, I expect better support than this. Being denied the ability to use iPhoto or iMovie on the origional iPad is little more than a rude slap in the face.

Geesh; and some people actually have a LIFE!

Work life? My wife and I are long retired. We used to take the MacBook with us on vacations, but the iPads are far easier to carry and use. We use them while sitting at our hotel room outside balcony overlooking the beach (Hawaii, Monterey, Huntington Beach, wherever). iPads are great for taking and viewing pictures and vids of our grandchildren. Nope, not interested in getting the old life back when we worked.

Apple Configuration Tool

Ah, there's the trick. Heard of it, haven't used it.

Well, I’m older, and set in my ways, but I wouldn’t only use the IPad (here I am back on my Macbook again for the afternoon) altho I’m finding that I tend to spend the mornings with the IPad and settle in later with the Mac to do more serious stuff. For one thing, I do a lot of photoshop. The little IPad photo stuff is fun to play with, but... :)
However, I think the camera on the newer IPad like my husband just got is worlds better than the one on mine and so we’ll see what it can do. I just downloaded something called, I think, Fast Cam and it takes a gazillion shots a second. That was fun to play with. There are a few apps that I can see some use for already. It’s just all different. I’m glad I have both, to be honest, and I never ever thought I’d say that.

This is pretty funny. I just received two of the new iPads on the 16th and the wife and I have been taxing them quite heavily since then and I’ve not noticed any heat at all.

Oh well, the dinosaur media has to create news to survive.
