When it comes to fearless battlefield feats there can be few to match that of the crab that amputated its own claw.
Filmed on the remote Pacific island of Clipperton, the crustacean is initially part of a raiding party on the nest of a group of Boobie birds.
However, he gets separated from his comrades and comes under a vicious attack.
The angry birds relentlessly peck him and in the end badly injure one of his claws.
But this is no defeat for the crab.
Instead of feeling sorry for himself he courageously cuts off the limp limb and marches off.
Fortunately, crab claws regenerate.

whew. cuz if they didn't, he probably would feel sorry for himself.
This is relatively distrubing - because this would indicates that the crab is somewhat sentient; in that it knows it will regrow a claw.
Crabs have been thought to be purely instinctual creatures - no real developed brain, they really are not aware of themselves as a being. However, unless there is some instictual trigger, this behavior would indicate that the crab accessed itself, made a decision in the present, for a reaction in the distant future.
Here are the birds attacking.
Animals from muskrats to foxes and larger gnaw off their own legs when caught in leg traps, and they don’t grow back. No biggie.
Birds: "Wha-- What?! It's Crab! We thought we killed you!"
Crab: "That's right. I'm alive. Got my claw back too. (*snap* *snap*) Whaddya know, huh?"
Birds (Backing into a corner): "Holy mother of-- Now listen, Crab. P-please don't... IT WAS ALL A MISTAKE!"
Crab (Leaning in): "The only mistake you made was that you double-crossed me and left me ALIVE."
Birds: (*snap* *snap*) "AAAAIIIEEEEEEEE-EEEEEeeeeee!!!" (*snap* *snap*)
It wasted no time making the decision though. It didn’t fool around trying find the best way to do it either. Pop! Done and done.
That Boobie could poke an eye out.
Even boobies have iPhones? Who knew?
Thus proving that wherever you are on the food chain, boobies can get you in trouble.
“’Tis but a flesh wound!”
I don't believe they have enough processing power.
I've programmed computers in cluster environments to shut themselves down in case of serious problems, so they don't screw up the others. It was simple programming. No sentience involved (except mine).
Which is why I believe intellegent design might have something to it.

'Ain't got time to bleed.'
Good one, hehe.
When one the farm, we needed to clear out a bunch of rats and I found one trap with just a leg in it, the rat had chewed off the leg to get away...another trap had only the rats tail in it....we also found out you have to tie the trap to something they cannot limp away with...we lost one trap and never did find it....another one was so gross I won’t even mention it.... they know what they need to do to get free....and do it...
Yup, they do. Any trapper (if that’s even still legal) that has run his trapline has found ‘part’ of the animal they caught and the rest is long gone.
Rats, mice, wolf, bear. The guy in Utah stuck in a rock.
The survival is strong in them critters. The guy, OK, he’s sentient ;)
