Word For The Day, Thursday, March 22, 2012 - brisance
dictionaries ad nauseam | 22 March 2012 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

brisance \bri-ZAHNS\ , noun
The shattering effect of a high explosive.

Example sentences:
The 'There' turned out to be crucial for the sense of brisance and closure and resolving issues of impotent rage and powerless fear that like accrued in Lenz all day being trapped in the northeastern portions of a squalid halfway house all day fearing for his life, Lenz felt.
-- David Foster Wallace, Infinite Jest

But this was sustained explosion, reaching now and then a quite unendurable brisance. Yet he endured it, not so much because it was her will as, unbelievably, what had become her need.
-- Thomas Pynchon, Against the Day

Etymology:
Brisance is a relatively new English word. It started being used commonly in the 1910s, but it can be traced to the Celtic word brissim meaning "to break."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

A+ for you. My Garmin has an Aussie accent.
Now, onto important matters, your team dispatched the Habs last night so why couldn't the Rangers deny Detroit a point? And Chicago and Vancouver needed 3 points too? C'mon! The Russian might play for us tonight against Dave's team, the CroMalkins.

Twitter wars are such fun. The latest one is the #WhyImIn. This was started by young dems to declare why they are in for another four years of theO. Conservatives have highjacked it and the results are hilarious. The brisance is brilliant. And the fun is ongoing.

Twitchy caught some of the early good ones.

Yes, you might say that, but then the subtlety is shot. ;-)

Great city — I visited Oz many moons ago in the 80’s. We have a big office there, I wouldn’t mind taking another “business trip” down there ..

“CroMalkins”, LOL

Detroit is hard to figure — they won so consistently at home, then stumbled against the Caps earlier this week. With all due respect to certain WAS fans, that team must go down!

It’s clever, but it doesn’t really fit for the style of hockey. Malkin does kind of have a prominent brow, though.

Well, Take-a-cheap-shot-and-then-hide-behind-your-teammates is kind of a mouthful. I’m not talking about Crosby there. You know you wish you thought of it. ;)

I might print up some t-shirts. This could be the next big thing.

I don’t follow the Caps - I’ve been a Redskins fan since 1956 and the incessant brisance of their weekly implosions has left me so shell-shocked I am unable to get my hopes up for any other team.

Such a pretty day-74 and sunny-I’m going to return to the woods in a bit with a book...

I wonder how big an earthquake
Obama’s undoing will cause?
Will the brisance be enough
To give the OWS’ers pause?

Will their awakening be rude
When they’ve gone back to work
And find Obama has misled them
And they’re still just a clerk?

No more free food card to swipe
Let them wring their hands and sob-
What fun to see the spoiled brats
Actually have to get a job

I saw that ad a couple of days ago on Fox news-I think it is way funnier and it makes the point better than the one the other side did with the Ryan look alike.

A+ for you. Someone called a radio show yesterday asking how they can regulate what people buy on their WIC card but not on their food stamp card.

I saw it then, too, just never found it on line til today. We are having a week of wonderful weather. The basketball court is full of young men having a pick up game. Love it.

On my way out the door earlier, I heard a song used for a lead-in on Fox that I remembered hearing/singing as a small child-”Shaboom Shaboom”.

Since I have been going around ever since singing it, I decided to see if I remembered the lyrics correctly after all those years-I was maybe 5 at the time.

That isn’t the first song I remember singing-I’ve always loved music, but I’m still wondering how my daughter sang Rolling Stones, Beatles and Bob Dillan songs as a small child that were popular when I was pregnant with her. I’ve asked her how she knew the songs, and she always says well mom you must have been singing it where I could hear.

“Oh, life could be a dream,
if I could take you up in paradise up above,
if you would tell me I’m the only one that you love
life could be a dream, sweetheart. Shboom, shboom, yada da da dada...”
