I'm looking for another rifle. I want this one for if the fecal matter hits the oscillating unit, you know basic target shooting at the club, *cough*. Should be high caliber but not ridiculous. I don't want to spend ridiculous dollars for something that looks great but is inferior. It must be semi-auto, not one shot. I can't think of a better place to ask for opinions. Makers, calibers and model suggestions welcome.
Choice 2: Springfield Armory M1A in .308 Win/7.62 NATO.

If you can afford those, they are excellent options. I am kinda in the same boat. I already have a Colt AR-15 and a M1 Garand. I’m thinking about saving now for either the M1A Springfield or an AK-47. Leaning AK, but my combat veteran brother, who packed an M-14 in Vietnam is pushing the M1A.
What rifles do you currently have?
Can’t go wrong with an SKS or AK rifle. Durable, easily cleanable, reliable, lots of ammo and parts available. Good round for close to medium range encounters, as you aren’t going to be a sniper.

While reading this thread, the words of former U.S. Senator from Texas Phil Gramm crossed my mind.
I think it was at an NRA convention when he said,
“I have more guns than I need but not as many as I want.”
Look up K Var, they are importing VEPR and Saiga rifles chambered in Russian 7.62mm; NATO 7.62mm and 5.56mm. Based on AK 47 system, very rugged and reliable. Prices are low cost for its durable construction.
Remington makes a 300 win mag that can be found most places for $350 to $400.
Don’t forget to “lose” it in a “boating accident.”
Yes as others have said, get a standard caliber. I have had several Colt AR-15 H-Bars and I can’t think of much better rifle period. They have a 1-7 twist so will handle the heavy bullets in 5.56. They will also shoot the lighter bullets OK.
If I am in a situation where I need a semi-auto, and it could happen, I am in a bad way, probably not going to make it out.
Maybe not for you but I personally would get a bolt action in .308 or 30-06. Remington is hard to beat but there are plenty of others. I would insist on way better than average accuracy. If the gun will not shoot 1 moa or better, I would see if it could be improved. If not trade it and start all over.
There are also plenty of good scopes. For the money the Nikons are unbeatable. You will never go wrong with a Leupold.
Also everyone should have a Ruger 10-22. Not that it is any better than others but it is reliable and there are plenty of high capacity mags for it.
The laws for your state are rather complicated. You would be better off asking a local dealer what you can buy. Either that or move to another state.
AR-10 but it is expensive to shoot even though it’s superior.
AR-15 if you’re on a budget.
If you decide to build your won, think along lines of a 'pistol' upper which goes on a carbine lower. The 11.5 inch upper receivers work just fine with a pistol buffer, and if you decide to go further, you can turn it into an SBR for a $200 federal tax stamp app. All you'll need to do is register a lower receiver like you would buying an entire gun, then build on it what you want so long as you abide by the laws of SBR and pistol format for ARs.
And if you're looking for something that will shoot like a bullet hose without delicate maintenance, the AK and SKS flavors are inexpensive and hit hard and accurately inside 150 yards. They are heavy, however. I reccommend the AR platform and I build 11.5 piston kit pistols in 5.56. If the SHTF scenario arrives, the pistol weapons can be transformed into SBRs very easily with a stock and buffertube assemly.
Can’t go wrong with virtually any AR type rifle, as long as it’s from one of the good manufacturers, or you could just build your own. Can’t go wrong with an AK47 either. FN-FALs are also good. I have some AR type rifles, but my semi-auto heavy hitter is a PTR-91(HK91 clone 7.62NATO/.308 made new in the US). Would just LOVE to get me a Barret .50!
Your next rifle should be an unrifled .50 caliber barrel.

If you're willing to go down to 5.56 and have the time and willingness to shop around, you can purchase the receiver, upper and components and build a custom rifle from the ground up. If you want something out of the box, take a look at S&W's M&P-15. The base model is pretty decent value with an MSRP of $739.
A Remington 700 chambered for .270 or 30:06 will reach to 300 yards if you have a decent scope on it. 100 yards every time, 200 yards most of the time, 300 yards if you are good, have match ammo, and can read the wind correctly. After 300 yards it gets very damn iffy.
