President Barack Obama won't be joining the throngs of Americans lining up to buy a Mega Millions ticket, the White House said Thursday as the multi-state lottery's jackpot hit a record estimated $540 million jackpot ($389.8 million if you take the cash option).

But "I'm going to run out and buy one," press secretary Jay Carney lightheartedly told reporters as he wrapped up his daily briefing.

Earlier, at a deli a few blocks from the White House, customers lined up six deep to trade their greenbacks for the salmon-pink tickets, some of which bear the mention "D.C. Lottery Commemorative Ticket" and "I played the world's largest jackpot!"

Hemmer on FoxNews said that the jackpot may reach $600 million due to the frenzy buying today. They showed video of long lines of customers in several locations.

I bought 2 numbers at the local convenience store last evening. I was the only one in the store, except for the clerk. They may get busier today.

I would have asked Carney how fast the administration spends $600 million.

The correct answer would have been less than two hours. Seriously.

What a great idea it would be to let excess food stamps be used to buy lottery tickets.

Seriously.

The money goes straight to the state, and if someone wins despite the long, long, odds against them they’re off the program!

And it would be very popular with the welfare class.

All be great fun except for one fact:

Of the dollars spent, millions and millions will be welfare dollars that WE paid for.

Of course that won’t stop a round of demand for welfare increases because, “we wouldn’t want little kids to go hungry.”

First smart thing he has done in his life. The lottery is an idiot tax. You would have better luck buying $1 of a sub penny stock and hoping for the best (heck, you would have better odds buying a coke with it and hoping you pee gold).

Obama has no reason to buy a lottery ticket when he will now travel the world on the taxpayers tab for the rest of his life while he works to deconstruct the nation that supports him.

I want him to get off his bony ass and help the American economy by buying a ticket, just once in his miserable life. I want him to win the 540+ million dollar and then pay 50% in Federal taxes, then see him squirm, about how the rich ought to pay more; then die broke and penniless.

Odds are 760,000,000 to 1.

Ya got a better chance of being hit by lightning!

But but buttttttt

It’s for the chiiiiiiiillllllldrennnnnnnnn!

Some of the lotto money ‘supposedly’ goes for scholarships and education.

You know, like that massive tobacco settlement money went for stop-smoking education, etc.

Yep, the lottery is a tax on people who can’t do math.

Still better odds than Mitt Romney beating Obama.

I bought two tickets yesterday at a different convenience store for each one. No lines at either store in Tx.

The lottery is an idiot tax.

That's what my boss told me. I said the odds were infinitely better than getting rich working for him.

That's what the masters of the Lottery- ie Big Brother want you to think. Keep on hoping Big Brother's program will rescue you instead of taking charge of your destiny.

The lottery is an idiot tax.

Then it's safe to assume that Joe Biden bought a ticket.

Understandable. This is small change compared to the Global Warming fraud and other deals like Solyndra.
