Chief Jay Strongbow, the WWWF star who died today, was always a pretty matter of fact guy, someone who saw his role as a star wrestler as a job and never expressed a great love of the business.

The name brings back memories of Saturday afternoon wrestling shows and Vegomatic commercials.

I wonder how many of the guys from that era are still with us? That was the golden age of wrestling in my opinion. I use to love when George The Animal Steel use to eat the turnbuckle.

My friends and I were at ring side at the old Philadelphia Arena in West Philly in the early 70s. The main event was Strongbow against George "The Animal" Steele. It was a pretty wild match. At one point, a rather large woman jumped up on the ring apron and handed Strongbow her umbrella, which he proceeded to use on Steele (of course, the ref didn't see it!) A few minutes later, after Strongbow pinned Steele, another woman jumped up on the ring apron and handed Strongbow her baby! The Chief did his War Dance around the ring with the infant hoisted up on his shoulder. (That baby is around 40 now, and who knows, may be reading this!)

Rest in Peace, Chief.

George The Animal Steele said that Strongbow was a member of the aWOPoho tribe.

Man thats some memory you have there!
I never went to see wrestling there but I did go to see a girls rollerblade event with my dad once in Philly. That must have been in the late 60s

I do remember buying a book on how to use weights to get strong by the wrestling champ Bruno Samartino (sp)

American good times... thank you

I'm pretty good when it comes to remembering details about obscure events that happened 30 or 40 years ago. However, it's often a struggle to recall what I did yesterday!
