Asexuality comes out of the closet

We’ve come a long way since the late '40s, when Kinsey report shocked the world with its frank discussion of the many varieties of sexual intimacy. And thanks to the sexual revolution, the gay rights movement and years of public awareness-raising, people these days feel comfortable identifying as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender.

But there’s another category that’s remained in the shadows.

As reported this month in The Atlantic, approximately one percent of the population self-identifies as asexual – that is, feeling no sexual attraction to others.

According to the website of the Asexuality Visibility and Education Network (AVEN), there are many degrees and definitions of asexuality. Some asexuals feel they are “born this way,” while some have experienced intermittent periods of asexuality for various reasons.

Some are in romantic relationships, some have never kissed or even dated. But advocates want to raise awareness that asexuality is a difference, not a defect. Sexual intimacy, they argue, is not the only way to define a loving relationship; being single doesn’t necessarily mean being lonely.

You know, I pondered this before I got married and then had children a few years later...she has no interest. Period. She would rather do home stuff, kids stuff, wine tasting, walking/exercise, movies, reading or cooking vs. sex.

Every one of my guy friends says the same thing...one year in or any kids, the wife is happy with a TV set and talking about kids with the girls.

Women use sex to get a man hooked, then they can never have to do it again...or if you leave, they get half.

Great deal. No wonder so many men cheat.

I think this may explain Sen. Lindsey Graham. I have long not believed the man is a homosexual, the reason being that over his lifetime surely some evidence of that would have come out and to the best of my knowledge, it has not.

Asexuality sure could explain the man.
