Asexuality comes out of the closet
scpr.org ^ | April 6, 2012

We’ve come a long way since the late '40s, when Kinsey report shocked the world with its frank discussion of the many varieties of sexual intimacy. And thanks to the sexual revolution, the gay rights movement and years of public awareness-raising, people these days feel comfortable identifying as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender.

But there’s another category that’s remained in the shadows.

As reported this month in The Atlantic, approximately one percent of the population self-identifies as asexual – that is, feeling no sexual attraction to others.

According to the website of the Asexuality Visibility and Education Network (AVEN), there are many degrees and definitions of asexuality. Some asexuals feel they are “born this way,” while some have experienced intermittent periods of asexuality for various reasons.

Some are in romantic relationships, some have never kissed or even dated. But advocates want to raise awareness that asexuality is a difference, not a defect. Sexual intimacy, they argue, is not the only way to define a loving relationship; being single doesn’t necessarily mean being lonely.

Descriptives like 'frigid', 'old maid', 'spinster', and 'my ex-wife' immediately come to mind.........

Yeah. And if the current Mrs. Viking doesn't learn to un-clam the gams a little more, she's going to be another closed case in The Ex-Files........

You know, I pondered this before I got married and then had children a few years later...she has no interest. Period. She would rather do home stuff, kids stuff, wine tasting, walking/exercise, movies, reading or cooking vs. sex.

Every one of my guy friends says the same thing...one year in or any kids, the wife is happy with a TV set and talking about kids with the girls.

Women use sex to get a man hooked, then they can never have to do it again...or if you leave, they get half.

Great deal. No wonder so many men cheat.

Sad. My wife isn’t like that at all. Even after two kids and 23 years of marriage, any time is the right time for us.

I think this may explain Sen. Lindsey Graham. I have long not believed the man is a homosexual, the reason being that over his lifetime surely some evidence of that would have come out and to the best of my knowledge, it has not.

Asexuality sure could explain the man.

Um, no, not all women. There are plenty of us that are still interested in sex. Maybe keeping that interest has something to do with a guy being just as interested in his partner’s pleasure as his own...

Could be porn, could be Beanie Babies...

Yeah, a lot of these guy whining about sex with their wives are porn disabled. They should look at their own selves rather than whine about the lack of interest they inspire in their wives. Porn is not exactly the energy and spirit of love and romance... It is a turn off for real life sex and love.

(insert Batman joke)

When I was a kid I thought sex was gross and told some girl I was asexual. Then she said I probably didn’t have a (slang term for male organ) so I think I flashed her (the memory is fuzzy I’m not sure what grade I was in) thank God the teacher wasn’t in the room!

Then puberty happened! 180!

There was an episode of “House” where a patient was asexual (and yet somehow had a hot wife), turns out it was a symptom.

Also, I have to mention Sheldon Cooper.

I’ve only watched “Big Bang” a few times, but the guy playing Sheldon seems kinda gay. Asexual people creep me out, some of them seem to be on those leftist political sites... and they also seem most likely to potentially commit heinous crimes (in my humble estimation).

I think the actor is gay, he hasn’t said so but they say he is.

Great character though.

I started watching that show when it moved into syndication, I like it a lot. I usually don’t watch sitcoms. The one with Dougie Howser I watched 1 and a half episodes of, AWFUL. Maybe they were bad episodes but I can’t see why that show is popular.

Ah, Doogie Howser. I don’t believe I’ve seen it but once since after it aired in prime time. I liked it at the time, seemed rather novel, and Neil Patrick Harris was good in the role. I don’t know how I’d feel about it today. I snickered that the arrogant 1st Excelsior Captain Styles was Doogie’s dad (although he was more known for “Hill Street Blues”, a show I rarely got to see since it was on past my childhood bedtime) and his mom was Sonny Crockett’s ex-wife from “Miami Vice.” Sometimes the shows aren’t as good as you remember them (but having recently watched ‘Vice’ reruns, it’s even better than I remembered — plus as a kid, I couldn’t appreciate it as much).

I saw an ep of Doogie for the first time probably since it was actually on a few months ago. Doogie liked some girl with a huge ugly nose, his friend mocked him, then found out she was having a nose job and started to date her, he lets slip he know and finds out she cancelled it (cause she thought she got a man without it) she dumped him, then he said sorry and they made up and she was probably never heard from again.

The pilot was on at like 4:AM a few weeks ago but I didn’t watch it other then the opening scene, Doogie while taking his driving test (and doing poorly) got out to treat a car crash victim to the incredulity of a couple cops.
