Ozzie Guillen: "I Get Drunk" After Every Game
NBC Miami ^ | Friday, Apr 6, 2012 | David Hill

Marlins manager stays out of trouble by tethering himself to the hotel bar on road trips

Miami Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen has a very particular postgame routine on road trips, one that he detailed to CBS Sports on Thursday. Simply put, he drinks – a lot.

"I go to the hotel bar, get drunk, sleep," Guillen said. "I don't do anything else." Win or lose, Ozzie will booze.

"I get drunk because I'm happy we win or I get drunk because I'm very sad and disturbed because we lose," he added. "Same routine, it never changes. It's been the same routine for 25, 28 years. It doesn't change. I don't like to go out."

How little does he like to go out? He said he has only been to South Beach three times during the 12 years he has lived in South Florida. He added that he's never seen the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco or the World Trade Center in New York, despite numerous road trips to both cities.

Not going out has its advantages, though, according to Guillen. "I never get in trouble, you see that?" he said. "I never leave the hotel. Nobody can call my wife and tell her they see Ozzie in this bar or place."

Indeed, while Guillen has gotten into trouble with his words, he's never been burned by his actions. He said there is a good reason for that. "If I got drunk and someone talked [smack] to me, there'd be a fight," Guillen said. "I'm too little to fight. If I was [Giancarlo] Stanton's size, I would be looking for fights. I can't. I might get killed."

Guillen will surely be criticized for these statements. There is a good chance that while he drinks every night, he probably does not really "get drunk." Making light of drunkenness will rub some people the wrong way.

But even if he does drink every night after road games, at least he does so in a way that keeps him out of trouble (and off the road). Plus, now the Marlins' beat writers will know that if Guillen is in a bad mood some days, it's only because he's hung over.

Why does the article dance around? There is a term for his condition - Alcoholic. It is no fun being one or living with one.

Nothing illegal Ozzie but watch the blood pressure and liver while you’re hitting the firewater so hard..

Well I think he missed his window of opportunity to see the latter.

Personally, I've never been able to get drunk in a hotel room. I can't afford to. Those hotel mini-bars make everything smaller and more expensive.

Racist Commie.

I recommend you drink before and during games as well. Heavily.

I used to do the same thing every day. I went to work every day and did my job and I got hammered every night. Working second shift kept me out of trouble.

I was a functional drunk.

“Racist Commie.”

He’s not a commie. Hates Chavez for what he did to Valenzuela, his former homeland. I have his Playboy interview and he’s more American than any latino I know of. His number 1 rule in baseball: “All I ask is my players to be here before the national anthem to give thanks to America.”

Yup. Ozzie did say that and his kid also is as patriotic as he is. He’s crazy as sh*t but at least he ain’t a libtard.

“Not going out has its advantages, though, according to Guillen. “I never get in trouble.”

That’s been my personal motto now for a few years.
When i was younger i could not imagine staying home on a Friday or Saturday night.
Now i’m just like “whatever” and when i do go out it is almost never on a fri or sat, who needs the trouble?

Well, I guess he is bipolar then, because I remember the incident cardinal4 described as well as several quotes from him putting his hyphenated, “minority” Hispanic status right up front.

Glad to hear he has a good side.

Somewhere, there’s an empty folding chair in a church basement with Ozzie’s name on it.

Yes, I remember that but he continued the argument because his beef is with the japanese players like Ichiro who “need’ a translator yet the latino players are not allowed it. And he has a point as I am (begrudgingly) a Mariners fan, I have to agree with Ozzie as Ichiro after 10 years speaks impeccable English yet still needs a translator with interviews.

and BTW, the reason why I have that Playboy issue is because my college fratmate’s cousin was one of the centerfolds (snicker) so it was a coincidence.

I work with some guys like this. When they recently went to a conference in Nashville, instead of going out and seeing the music/city, they went to a bar to drink.....every night.

They are missing a lot.

Same thing is happening with the new Texas Rangers’ player from Japan; Yu Darvish. In all interviews with the press, he has a translator and only answers in Japanese. Our local TV sports guys have said that he speaks English very well among his teammates and coaches. .....Perhaps it’s because he may not understand various slang terms that reporters might use when asking their questions and prefers the translator so that he will not answer incorrectly. ??

Like Ozzie, I drink (beer) every night at home before going to bed. I think he’s probably stretching it to say he gets drunk. I just drink until I get sleepy, not drunk, and never have a hangover even though I average around 15 each night. .....I am 69 and can sleep as long as I want as a retiree. ............When I was employed, I frequently traveled to other cities and would do like Ozzie; just having a few at the hotel bar after dinner and then going to bed. It’s easy to stay out of trouble that way.
