FRENCH VALLEY (CBS) — A French Valley man shot a pit bull-boxer mix after it began to attack his 11-year-old son, a sheriff’s sergeant said Saturday.
The dog was later captured and put down by Animal Control officers, according to officials.
The incident occurred shortly before 4 p.m. Friday near the intersection of Orange Blossom Drive and Allium Lane in unincorporated Riverside County, according to Sgt. Steve Fredericks.
The dog, owned by a neighbor, broke free from its leash and then bit the boy. The boy’s father got his handgun and fired one shot when the dog lunged toward him, Fredericks said.
The dog was hit, but was able to run away.
The boy was treated at a local hospital and was expected to make a full recovery. No criminal charges were planned from the incident, Fredericks said.
Given the choice of stock photo to run with the story, which do you suppose CBS went with:
A) vicious dog
or
B) eeeevil handgun?

Surprised they didn’t just make the title “man shoots neighbors dog, police investigate”
Or, given that the dog lived nearby, they could just as well have said “man shoots neighbor, police investigate”.
That would be ideal, all right, but it would take a brain shot to stop a dog right here and right now, and dogs' brains aren't real large. If I ever have to shoot a dog, my plan is to empty the gun, reload, and be prepared to empty the gun again. Even when morally wounded, some dogs can keep going long enough to do serious damage.
Or the headline could say,
“Police job security reduced after citizen shoots dog.”

What is wrong with this story? It implies that after the son was bitten, the father went somewhere and retrieved his gun, then approached the dog and shot it when it lunged at him.
This being California, where most carry is unlawful, this would seem to be the likeliest thing.
People don't realize how tough most animals are. I was deer

I was thinking of saying the same thing. There are no brownie points given for taking the attacking dog down with one shot. The only thing that matters is that it doesn't do harm anymore.
You have 10 rounds in the gun (at least a reasonable 9mm does) so you shoot at the first safe opportunity. Dogs are fast creatures; that pitbull could be all over you in a second. You don't have much time; but you have 10 rounds in the gun and 20 more on the belt.
On top of that, a brain shot of a dog would require either a lucky hit through a cranial opening (eyes, nose) or a lucky penetration of the cranium. A bullet can easily bounce. The impact of the bullet is exactly the same as the recoil of the gun; if you can take it, the dog also can. A glancing impact may have no effect at all.

A trained pit bull would have eaten both the son and the father before they could react.

LOL, that’s a ridiculous description. You must account for distribution and inertia.

I think you mis-typed. You probably meant “Even when morally wounded, some Democrats like our unbeloved President can keep going long enough to do serious damage.”
Is that about right?
Both objects (you and the target) are at rest, for all practical purposes. You only need to account for distribution. Since the bullet is smaller, it creates higher pressure and can penetrate.
In other words, imagine that two people are in a duel. Person A shoots and hits the barrel of the B's gun. The bullet enters the barrel and stops. Both persons feel exactly the same impact. You can generate additional energy only if you fire rockets.
The gun has a moment of inertia that’s significantly greater than the bullet’s. This accounts for the bullet’s force vector. Managing the recoil has no effect on the bullet.
Regarding the distribution of force, imagine pressing the wrong end of a pin into a cushion.
A dog can be a lot harder to hit than a man. They bob, weave and change direction rapidly. When one is attacking my son, I would count any hit that did not injure my son as good shot, maybe a very good shot.
It is a lot easier to make a good shot with a computer than with a handgun...
With a lot of police departments having moved from 9mm to .40, you see LOTS of one shot stops of dogs. In the past amped up angry dogs use to take up to six shots before stopping, probably just bleeding out.
