Planet Green Rebrands as Destination America

Discovery Communications will rebrand its Planet Green network as Destination America on Memorial Day, May 28. The newly christened channel "will be the first network to celebrate the people, places, and stories of the United States, emblazoned with the grit and tenacity, honesty and work ethic, humor and adventurousness that characterize our nation," according to officials at the programmer. Destination America will target adults 25 to 54 with genres like natural history, food, travel, home and adventure, and be available in 59 million homes at launch. Henry Schleiff will be the president and general manager of the network in addition to holding that title at Investigation Discovery and Military Channel.

Planet Green launched in 2008 as a network dedicated to ecology and environmental programming, replacing Discovery Home. Despite efforts to broaden the channel's programming, Planet Green struggled to breakout and a rebrand was expected.

Destination America's initial summer programming slate includes a new season of BBQ Pitmasters; Fast Food Mania, where host Jon Hein travels in search of the most unusual fast food items and outposts; Super-Duper Thrill Rides, an hour-long series on the most extreme roller coasters; United States of Food, a celebration of America's obsession with meat; Cheating Las Vegas, a look at some of the most elaborate scams in modern casino gaming; and Ghost Town Gold, which explores the Wild West for collectible artifacts.

"Americans may be divided by politics, but we are united by our love of country," Schleiff said in a statement. "As a network inclusive to all, Destination America will celebrate this connective spirit by curating the common ground among us: the pluck of the worn saddle, the promise of exploring new territory, and the diversity that has made this nation great."

I’ve actually liked some of the programming on “Planet Green” and surprised it hasn’t been as lefty as one would suppose. Somebody got “born again”?

I see this as a good sign .

People will realize that “green” was a minority and a small minority fad.

Too bad McCain and Romney did not have the foresight.

Conservatives make a big mistake by letting the LEFT be the face of recycled American products. Yesterday a PBS story on jobs folks on two panels said, "I would not move or even take that job." One was in a recycle plant - former prison inmates are their primary workers. One went from the job to a management role - the story said, "He earns nearly a 6 figure salary." Compost used in the landscape industry, plastic used to make fabric like "fleece" and cement that is turned into energy efficent siding - these are some of the products that are "Made in America" by people willing to work.

Where are the documentaries on Kiros, as a prison ministry or stories of the homeless shelters that turn around the lives of the Veteran that has lsot theri way? This work is often done by conservative religous groups but their story is left untold. We look like we are not serious about "caring for our brother." to the MSM, but in fact we do more as volutneers and DEMAND that government leave the volunteer alone. Yet the HHS scandal shows that government is coming after all we hold dear.

"Americans may be divided by politics, but we are united by our love of country," Schleiff said

Common sense tells me, that cannot be true, because that political division is clearly Marxism vs Freedom, one of those does not love our Country.

I have said more than once that if Rush was a true conservative, he would use some of his considerable fortune to invest in a conservative network, a system that would showcase the sort of story you describe.

BTW, I have never even heard of Green TV, but I have little hope that the programs carried by the replacement network will promote any views that are not leftist.

Nest, they should rebrand the History Channel so Sen. Grassley will cease the merciless tweets about how there’s no history on the History Channel... :D

What Schleiff said is stupid, indeed. As you say, all you need to do is count the American flags at Tea Party rallies vs. flags at any leftist protest or gathering. The marxists will have upside down American flags, flags being trampled, or communist red banners and Che flags.

I’ve been amazed at the failures of Planet Green.
All they had to do was buy broadcast rights from CBC, ABC (Australia), BBC , ITV, RTÉ , Ginger, BBC Channel 5, Channel 4 etc .

Very strange considering the parent company is a production partner on many of the documentaries that are aired overseas, yet never make it on air in the US.

Too right, about Green TV and what is missing for conservatives. I think Rush is good at radio, but that he may not be as innovative as is needed to run a network.
