A vaccine that can train cancer patients' own bodies to seek out and destroy tumour cells has been developed by scientists.
The therapy, which targets a molecule found in 90 per cent of all cancers, could provide a universal injection that allows patients' immune systems to fight off common cancers including breast and prostate cancer.
Preliminary results from early clinical trials have shown the vaccine can trigger an immune response in patients and reduce levels of disease.
The scientists behind the vaccine now hope to conduct larger trials in patients to prove it can be effective against a range of different cancers.
They believe it could be used to combat small tumours if they are detected early enough or to help prevent the return and spread of disease in patients who have undergone other forms of treatment such as surgery.
Cancer cells usually evade patient's immune systems because they are not recognised as being a threat. While the immune system usually attacks foreign cells such as bacteria, tumours are formed of the patient's own cells that have malfunctioned.
Scientists have, however, found that a molecule called MUC1, which is found in high amounts on the surface of cancer cells, can be used to help the immune system detect tumours.
The new vaccine, developed by drug company Vaxil Biotheraputics along with researchers at Tel Aviv University, uses a small section of the molecule to prime the immune system so that it can identify and destroy cancer cells.

Just kidding, this sounds great! Hope it works!
Like the latest IPhone, I think Ill wait till the bugs are worked out. I would hate for it to target the wrong cells, and then find out they had released an update I had missed.
Long live Israel.
Isn’t this how most zombie movies start?
It’s ironic/sad to read this. Some years back my sister lost her battle with breast cancer. She really wanted to live and went through EVERYTHING. The most extreme chemo, extreme radiation and surgeries possible. All for naught.
When she went to the hospital for what would be the last time, I remember the family standing around talking to her doctor. He was really a great guy. We all asked him if there was anything he could do. This story really brought back memories of his answer, “I’m sorry, we’ve done everything we can, there’s nothing left to try. And I hate to tell you this, but we really can’t stop this stuff from the outside anyway. It’s sad, because our own bodies could easily get rid of cancer. If our body could just be convinced cancer was something that didn’t belong there, it could be gone a month.”
How does this help the DNC divide the nation?
US news will not carry this great, awesome story.
ha!
Exactly what I was thinking.
“I think Ill wait till the bugs are worked out.”
If one is terminal, why worry about working out the bugs? I think it should be marketed right away for such patients.
I’m truly sorry for your loss.
Hopefully, this new treatment will be of help if any of your other loved ones falls ill to the disease.
Surely for them but not for me as a vaccine.
Just what I was thinking.
"I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others." Gen 12:2
“Surely for them but not for me as a vaccine.”
Yes.
If ObamaCare stands...I think we will see a lot more of this.
Cancer treatment is very expensive. Not at all in line with the criteria.
Cancer is a absolute destroyer of life and I truly pray and hope this is true.
A universal, mandatory injection, no doubt.
What could go wrong?
They also have wonderful progress on curing diabetes from Israel as well. What did we get from the other side of the family? Oh yea, zeros. We’re adding a few more to the national debt this month...
