'How I Met Your Mother,' Late-Blooming Hit
The New York Times ^ | Monday, April 9, 2012 | BILL CARTER

In what amounts to late middle age in television the CBS comedy "How I Met Your Mother" suddenly finds itself a hit.

Seven years into its run this well-regarded series, which returns with a new episode on Monday night, is scoring its best ratings. It is up almost 20 percent this season among the audience that advertisers most want to reach, viewers between the ages of 18 and 49, and now ranks as the No. 8 entertainment show in that category.

Beyond giving comfort to late bloomers everywhere, the performance by "How I Met Your Mother" is proving that the new ways to watch television can sometimes enhance the old ways. Two factors changed the trajectory of the show this year: its early seasons became available on Netflix, and repeats began running on FX, a cable channel with an audience especially well matched to the show's core viewership.

"It's very unscientific," said Craig Thomas, who created "How I Met Your Mother," with Carter Bays, "but people have told us: 'I always heard your show was good. I caught up, and now I watch it live on TV.' "

I watched a couple of episodes, then I switched to re-runs of Hogan’s Heroes.

Isn’t the “husband” in that series a pervert in real life? Not that I’d watch it if he wasn’t.Network TV lost me about 30 years ago.

I watched about 5 minutes, and when they tried to sell the idea that Homo Doogie Howser is a womanizer, I couldn’t stomach it.

Doogie is a homo plus the show is on about a hundred times a week. It’s like Friends only more annoying.

It’s not a bad show, but definitely for adults. It has the least amount of politically correctness of any show now on broadcast networks.

It’s over the top because it’s an autobiographical narrative of a father told (with embellishments) to his late teen children.

I can't stand it when I run across this show.

The characters (and the actor that play them) exude the worst of what is wrong with our culture. They all play the "snarky, ironic, I-Think-I'm-Hilarious-With-My-Antics" narcissists.

In truth, they are shallow, self-absorbed, and selfish.

Never watched it. Gave up entirely on modern sitcoms. The characters are always so bratty and insufferably self-absorbed. I really can’t stomach them. And the ‘humor’ is invariably nothing much beyond a constant stream of tacky put-downs and sexual innuendos. So tired and lame. Really makes me want to vomit, seeing how far the culture has devolved. And I used to actually ‘enjoy’ sitcoms!

I laugh at this kind of hype (but not that show, it is not funny at all) because only idiots watch it. They must be the children of the part of my generation that made Laverne and Shirley the top show for a couple of years. Pure stupidity. Goes to show you why advertisers gear their ads for idiots. (they know who is watching)

It’s on before Big Bang (about the only thing I watch). I turn the TV on and immediately hit mute just in case I’m early.

Charles Nelson Reilly never sold me with that kind of acting, either.

I know what you mean. Last year there was a truly funny sitcom on the air for a while. Ousourced was about an American grad who gets a job running a call centre in India. It disappeared after about a dozen episodes. I've concluded that the good shows go nowhere because the people who would appreciate them have given up on TV.

It's like football players scoring a touchdown and holding up eight fingers.

Yeah. I've been watching it for years and am tired of it.

I just want to punch Ted and tell him to STFU and stop whining.

And why doesn't Barney have HIV yet?

Outsourced was based on a movie and the movie was a lot better than the sitcom. I recommend the movie and it is available on Netflix.

There's no explaining taste. I refuse to get into the "good" and "bad" argument, I just know (and care about) what I like. I have no emotional need to be among the "popularity" freaks.

In fact, I feel a warm sense of pride to have never watched "reality" shows, "comedy" shows such as Roseann Barr, Ellen Degenerate and Two and a half Men, and the dysfunctional "actors" providing this entertainment.

Never missed them, and never felt the slightest need to apologize for lacking the dumbass gene.

I never thought the show was very funny but Neil Patrick Harris is a fabulous, talented performer. He’s great in front of a camera as well as on stage. As opposed I am of homosexuality, I’d kill to see Harris on Broadway.

Count me as an idiot that watches it. Ted is the least entertaining character on there and despite its ratings needs to wrap it up in another season or two.

He meant the kids are in their late teens - and the show is told in flashback ...

Thank you for saying that. Everyone else on this thread needs to loosen up. Don’t like the show, fine. Don’t need to stop by this thread just like I never frequent American Idol threads.

I watched it for the first season or two; got tired of it. I always thought Ted was gay. At least Neil Patrick Harris is convincing as a womanizing straight. I always thought the show should be called: "How I, a Gay Man, Met Your Mother".

If it is only now a "hit", why has it been on for 7 years?

Agreed. I don't know why people complain about him? He's such a talented actor. And his personal life is none of my business and I don't care what he does in his bedroom at home.
