SF Easter celebrations blend indulgence, reverence

As a kid growing up in San Francisco, 6-year-old Finley Cooper already knows how to celebrate in style.

For Easter, he put on a white tux with tails, a robin's-egg-blue cummerbund and a matching bow tie.

And when the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence yelled "Go, kids!" he raced for eggs in Dolores Park on Sunday with hundreds of other children decked out in bunny ears, princess dresses and "Beach Blanket Babylon"-style towering bonnets.

"Apparently, there's chocolate in the eggs," Finley said, sucking on a lollipop. He planned to pass his bounty out to kids who didn't get any eggs in the scrum, so he hadn't opened them.

Gathering of Sisters

Easter was the 33rd anniversary of the formation of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, the charitable order of queer "nuns" that formed in 1979, when a few men donned habits and bar-hopped in the Castro to great applause. Today, the order is worldwide and uses a mixture of activism, camp and frivolity to promote tolerance and human rights, sometimes ruffling conservative members of the Catholic Church.

"Easter is a party for us in Dolores Park that we invite everybody to," said Sister Flora Goodthyme, who handed out cupcakes. Sisters from Southern California, Guerneville, Boston and Seattle came to Dolores Park on Sunday to celebrate.

Their annual Easter party starts with an egg hunt, followed by a bonnet contest, some burlesque, lots of lip-synching to extended dance remixes and the much-anticipated Hunky Jesus Contest.

I’m sincerely stunned that God hasn’t vented His wrath on this country in a huge way. We surely are no better than Sodom.

I'm surprised...you mean KIDS do live in that City?? Poor child!!! /s

Will someone in NorthCarolina please BLOCK the Cooper's relatives from coming back to the state. They might bring some BAD IDEAS (aka LIBERALISM) to the state!!

To demonstrate “tolerance” these freaks mock and denigrate Christianity on its holiest holiday.

In the comments to the sfgate article any objectors are told to leave San Francisco.

Gays are evil. Leftists are evil. It is the same evil.

Want to teach the kid a real lesson? Let him run around for 20 minutes collecting up eggs and then before he can enjoy a single one, tell him they are going to be all put into one big basket and everyone will equally SHARE the bounty.

A lesson in Marxism will make him question why he exerted himself in the first place and he will realize there is no charity in forced taxation.

Wonder how they'd feel if people gathered together in the park and celebrated the suffering an AIDS patient endures on the road to death? Do you think they'd be “tolerant”?

Exactly. This would be pretty yawnworthy if they had picked another day to do their thing. But because it's Easter, it's not tolerant but aggressive and offensive.
