Word For The Day, Thursday, April 12, 2012 - macaronic
dictionaries ad nauseam | 12 April 2012 | Thursday's sub

Posted on 04/12/2012 4:35:57 AM PDT by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

macaronic \mak-uh-RON-ik\ , adjective
1. Composed of a mixture of languages.
2. Composed of or characterized by Latin words mixed with vernacular words or non-Latin words given Latin endings.
3. Mixed; jumbled.
noun
1. Macaronics, macaronic language.
2. A macaronic verse or other piece of writing.

Example sentences:
The tradition is even more significant in Folengo's Italian works and especially in his macaronic writings.
-- Mikhail Bakhtin, Rabelais and His World

The macaronic mode swivels between different languages. I believe Beckett chose French against English for similar reasons to those of Jean Arp in selecting French against German.
-- W. D. Redfern, French Laughter: Literary Humour from Diderot to Tournier

The journalistic multiplicity of voices found in the Magazine corresponded with the poetic multi-vocality of Fergusson's macaronic compositions, texts that combined elements of neo-classical English and vernacular Scots diction.
-- Ian Brown, The Edinburgh History of Scottish Literature

Etymology:
Macaronic is related to the word macaroni. Specifically, the pasta is named after the Southern Italian dialect maccarone, which was also associated with a mixture of Latin and vernacular languages.

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Ezra Pound, demented Fascist that he was, was a master of macaronic verse. Macaronic verse was also employed to effect by T.S. Eliot in The Waste Land", among other works:

"I sat upon the shore Fishing, with the arid plain behind me
Shall I at least set my lands in order?
London Bridge is falling down falling down falling down
Poi s'ascose nel foco che gli affina
Quando fiam ceu chelidon - O swallow swallow
Le Prince d'Aquitaine a la tour abolie
These fragments I have shored against my ruins
Why then Ile fit you. Hieronymo's mad againe.
Datta. Dayadhvam. Damyata.
Shantih
shantih shantih."

No contemporary poet, IMHO, can hold a candle to either one of them.

Excellent, ML! It is appropriate that the Ayatolloh of Mendacity should employ macaronic lingo!

One of the prettiest macaronic carols is “In dulce jubilo”, which is German/Latin. There are several English translations, some of which keep the Latin bits, and some not. Most people know it as “Good Christian Men Rejoice”. The King’s Singers on YouTube sing a great arrangement.

"No contemporary poet, IMHO, can hold a candle to either one of them."

So that's a good example of a bad example?

Mightn't holding a candle to them cause them to ignite?

Hillary Rosen's comment that Ann Romney never worked a day in her life, if delivered in piglatin would have been macaronic, but instead was merely MORONIC. Seriously, Dems, you want to tell Stay at Home moms that they are laggards and ignorant of economic issues? REALLY?

I didn't mean to be unclear - it's a figure of speech:

can't hold a candle to someone
Fig. not [to be] equal to someone; unable to measure up to someone. (Also with cannot.) Mary can't hold a candle to Ann when it comes to athletics. As for singing, John can't hold a candle to Jane.

The Brits (think the Tyrant Obama's regime)
mocked the American Patriots (think conservatives)
calling them fops who would dare put a feather in their hat
and presumptuously call it 'macaroni'.

And what is macaroni?:

Meanwhile, there was nary a whistle in the Pens-Flyers matchup. No penalties at all in the first period. I think the Pens ended up with 4 power plays.

Yeah, we weren’t too thrilled either. The first period was a little too easy and I give the Flyers credit for keeping coming.

The OT winner was pathetic. Two Penguins were standing there looking at the puck as the Flyer came up and knocked it in.

On the news last night, after the weather, the anchor said “Coming up more on the Pens-Flyers game. Stay tuned anyway.”

Macaronic

Let's see:

On top of Spumoni, down went the cheese, with macaroni, sangria and raw oysters you see.

I danced the macarena while the radio blared, up crawled the oysters but I wasn't scared,

until the sangria was a geyser in me and covered my partner from her toe to her knee.

Mr. Marconi is now my close friend cause there's nothing like fresh macaronic to make your dates end.

Some say, compar’d to Bononcini,
That Mynheer Handel ’s but a ninny;
Others aver that he to Handel
Is scarcely fit to hold a candle.
Strange all this difference should be
’Twixt Tweedledum and Tweedledee.

- John Byrom on the musical wars between Handel and Bononcini. Handel won.
