Microsoft says Windows XP users have two years to remain with the older operating system before it ends all support and updates for the software.
While users can continue to use Windows XP after the end of Microsoft support, the lack of such support and updates, especially security patches, will make the operating system less and less secure as time passes, Microsoft's Stella Chernyak wrote in a blog post.
"Windows XP and Office 2003 were great software releases for their time, but the technology environment has shifted," she wrote.
Support for Office 2003 will end at the same time as support for Windows XP, PC Magazine reported Wednesday.
About 47 percent of global Windows users are still running XP, data from Net Applications indicates. …

Pfft. I’m still running 2k. There are a bunch of unofficial patches for it on msfn.org that take over where MS left off.
Good job. How are they for Win98 stuff?
There are Win98 forums there and an active community with some ambitious projects, but 2k and 98 are completely different. I’ve heard that the IE patches were ported to run on 98, but I never looked any further into it.
XP is still the best OS, I’m sorry my computer won’t run it.
I still use xp, and i have linux mint on a separate partition.
I loved the final 98. I am now on 7/64 and have no complaints. in fact I like it as much as my old fave - Amiga Workbench 3.0 ;)
I kissed XP goodbye two weeks ago for Win7 (64 bit). I like it very much. No regrets.
While it's come as a surprise realization this AM, but we now have more Apple O/S products in the house than MS O/S products.
Mostly the kids and my wife use them. I've got my reasons for windows based business apps, but the rest of the family uses internet media and stuff. Research, music and video.
I didn't even really think about it until now. We just bought what we felt was the best functional alternative for what we needed. The last 5 computer products were all Apple.
Microsoft is going to get their butts kicked if this is the trend.
Look, four or five years ago I wouldn't have considered a need to buy an Apple product, but after buying just one, I became a believer.
My wife LOVES her IPhone and IPad. She has pain issues and finds being able to curl up with pillows or in an easy chair is the most comfortable for her. She takes her IPad and reads, listens to music and cruises the net. Just perfect for her.
The IPhone was a tool we found we relied on so much we never considered an alternative within the family. I got an android from work later, but the IPhone is superior in most ways.
XP worked after many years of patches. I expect there won't be such a giant leap by industry as there was in past years unless there is truly new ground breaking business functionality that gives a business a major competitive edge.
Still amazed an OS functioned this solidly for over 10 years in a world where technology changes daily. THis should be a monumental achievement than an OS designed before 2000 and introduced in 2001 is still a big % of the PCs running today even in businesses around the world. What’s the best Apple can counter with that? Snow Leopard is already forgotten about.
