Miyagi Prefecture: 20,000 Bq/kg from the herbal tea
宮城県蔵王町の業者が製造したヤーコン茶から高濃度の放射性セシウムが検出された問題で、県は１４日、セシウム濃度は国の基準値（１キロ当たり１００ベクレル）の２００倍超の２万２９０ベクレルだったと発表した。
Miyagi Prefecture announced on April 14 that 20,290 becquerels/kg of radioactive cesium was detected from the herbal tea produced by a manufacturer in Zao-machi in Miyagi Prefecture, more than 200 times the national safety limit (100 becquerels/kg).

It was 17,200 becquerels/kg according to the manufacturer's own testing. By April 14, about 40 sets of 1,100 sets of the tea already shipped had been recalled.
The herbal tea is in the powder form. About 1.5 grams of the tea powder is used to make one cup of tea, making each drink with 30 becquerels of radioactive cesium. Nothing to worry about, the prefectural government says, as if all the radioactive cesium people ingest is from this tea alone.

Contaminated food stuff and Red China are synonymous -- and the Red China companies that supply most of our vitamin C for supplements are in court defending against price fixing on top of everything else.
Do they only accept the new Canadian glow in the dark coins in payment.
Well, I for one have no idea if 17 becquerel/cup is a lot or not so much, or how that stacks up to daily background exposure. So... The story does not have much actual information in it. It just has some data points that may or may not be interesting.

There is no comparison between background radiation and consumption of radioactive isotopes. Consumption places the radiation source right against tissues that are continuously irradiated - internal irradiation is worse (more damaging). They only tested for cesium but it is unlikely that the tea crop would only be contaminated with one of the 31 isotopes reported in the disaster (IAEA report). It’s all too likely strontium is present (more damaging than cesium) as well as others so we don’t know the total radiation present, only that which they tested.
On the Ex-SKF.Blogspot.com website, I read testimony from a Japanese physician who was the head of a hospital’s isotope facility (testing patients with isotope tracers). In his testimony he said that 2 becquerel’s of radiation per liter of water had been proven to cause bladder cancer (don’t know by what percentage). Now, people probably drink more water than they do tea but factoring in how much radiation is unaccounted for (strontium, uranium, plutonium etc.) in the tea and not tested for in the rest of the environment (food, water, air) and knowing this must be added to a) background radiation and b) increased external radiation following Fukushima - this is all bad news.
So, that explains how he felt strong enough to challenge the Sensei.
