Olympics aside, this may be the biggest London event of the year. At least for Trekkies.
The actors who played captains on the five live-action "Star Trek" television shows - William Shatner, Patrick Stewart, Avery Brooks, Kate Mulgrew and Scott Bakula - are set to appear on stage for the first time. The five are due to attend the "Destination Star Trek London" fan convention, which takes place between October 19 and October 21 (get tickets here).

That much awesomeness in one place could tear a hole in the space time continuum. On the other hand, Janeway and Sisko will offset the awesomeness.

Old joke time. How can you tell Star Trek is the best example of science fiction around?
Answer: Socialism works.

I like Janeway. Let’s see you try command a ship that’s a thousand light years stranded away from home with officers who were part of a Federation rebel group. Wished I was the one babysitting a hot Borg blond as my daily routine.

LOL! I'm not a fan of anything but TOS. But supposedly there was an episode on one of the later series where a guy from the 20th century was sent to the future. He was curious how his investments were doing, and was told "we don't have THAT system anymore".
Right. I'm sure that in the 23rd century they still have some form of compensation. Do you think that a starship captain would work for the same number of "credits" as an ensign? Or the guy who cleans the Enterprise's toilets. Don't think so.

I didn’t watch much TNG and the like after B5 started but I did like Sisko and DS9 for the most part. I am mixed on Picard, Captain Quantum, and Mrs. Columbo.

Chakotay should have been Captain. Top Paris was a rebellious sort like Kirk and may have made a pretty good Captain.

I saw Shatner last summer, he was sharp at a tack - quick wit and just a great entertainer and didn’t look a day over 59...even tho he was 80!

That’s like asking if Ryker should have been captain, even though the first 3 seasons he turned down captain’s commissions more than once. Chakotay is steady and reliable but Janeway thinks 4 steps ahead.

I would have liked to have seen those 20th century people they unfroze and culture shocked appear maybe once or twice again somewhere in later seasons.

Seven of Nine rules the screen.
To: max americana
All of them had their charms.
Enterprise had an opportunity to deal with the subtleties of the main species, but no, they went into Time Travel instead.
That’s what wrecked the series for me.

I agree. T’pol, just like Seven of Nine, was most probably the reason why I kept watching.

You know, it is difficult to predict what people might be like with basically unlimited wealth and resources - perhaps some kind of altruistic “greater good” behavior would kick in most of the time for most people. I think Roddenberry was fairly vague (with good reason) on this, but it is worth considering that the “floor” would be raised quite a bit in such a society with unlimited fusion power, terraforming, essentially “unlimited” real estate, and so on. They have hinted a few times on Star Trek that the crew didn't HAVE to be on these dangerous missions, it was a calling and privilege for the few.
Most of the poor people in the US have possessions that the wealthiest person 150 years ago couldn't have even imagined, and they live much longer to boot.

Yeah, Picard said “we strive to better ourselves.” Funny how so many TNG episodes were about those not quite bettering themselves as well as others.
It’s hypocrisy when you also have to deal with resources and treaties over resources and fighting enemies that want those resources, etc.
If they could replicate dilithium then half of the shows would be more plotless.

I see your point, but nothing is "free" ultimately. "Someone" has to come fix things when the pipes burst, and the electrical grid goes down. And those folks don't get out of bed at 3am for nothing. And getting back to Star Trek, the high and mighty explorers may beam down to planets where money or gold or whatever is valuable talks. The planet's denizens aren't going to be too thrilled with "we don't use that icky MONEY". In fact in one of the Harry Mudd episodes, the Enterprise needed dilithium crystals. The miners decided to deal with Mudd instead of Kirk. Their price? Women.
Kirk could wave all kinds of filthy lucre in their faces, but the "currency" was female flesh.

I know what you meant but I’ve seen that argument on Fr before. It was not only her hubby’s activities that were out on display but the media pounced on the story and got what they wanted. Maybe you should also blame Mike Ditka who turned down the nomination for the seat, as he also admits the “what if” blame if he indeed took the opposition against Odumbo.
