ALBUQUERQUE Meow can't help but waddle. He's one super-sized cat.
The 2-year-old orange and white tabby tips the scale at nearly 40 pounds, and the Santa Fe Animal Shelter is on a mission to get the feline back into shape.
Meow's 87-year-old owner could no longer take care of him, so the pet was turned over to a shelter in southeastern New Mexico that called the Santa Fe shelter for help.
"The thing with this cat is when you look at it, certainly it's obese. You see that. But it's a sweet looking cat. His face is very sweet. It's just incredibly fat," shelter spokesman Ben Swan said Friday.
Meow has been placed with a foster family. He'll be on a special diet so he can start shedding some pounds. The goal is for him to lose at least 10 pounds so he can be put up for adoption.
The shelter plans to post updates on Meow's weight loss on its Facebook page.
It's not clear how the feline was able to gain so much weight in just two years. Adult cats typically weigh between seven and 12 pounds.

Too many sopapillas at Sadie’s.
I've seen quite a few older folks do this with their little dogs. They don't actually walk the dog, only let it outside in a fenced yard to do its business then let it back in. Then they feed the dog too much and too often, sometimes with table food or even specially prepared "people food" which is really not healthy for pets.
The little dogs get so big around they can barely walk, they make noise breathing, snore, and so forth.
The owner doesn't realize that they are just loving the poor little thing literally to death.
I can haz green chile cheezburger?
That's one reason why I have multiple cats - they burn calories
annoying playing with each other.
A fat cat and a strong woman. What are they feeding that thing?
Thats a Thanksgiving cat.
Cat has the shape and size like those animal pillows all the young girls have.
Yeah I love cats but I couldn’t eat that one all by myself.
I knew of a man in his late 80’s who was given a cat to keep him company after his wife of 62 years died.
His daughter paid him a visit a week after he’d gotten the cat and the poor old guy remarked that the cat didn’t like it’s food even after he’d added milk to it. His daughter saw that he’s been pouring milk over kitty litter. The canned cat food hadn’t been touched.
It was sad but at least the cat only went hungry for a week.
El Gato Gordo de Nuevo Mexico?
Hmm, I may resemble that, although I’m in Tejas. :)
Bet I know of someone who could.
I hear they have a less than perfect track record when it comes to consuming companion animals.
I have a 30 lb cat named Big Mama.
If Obama had a cat, it would look like Meow.
Nope. Too much white and no hoodie...
It wouldn’t bother me if Missy was fatter, it would keep her from being airborne most of the time. She travels the length of the house and never touches the floor, it’s rough on things that get in her way.
Obama has Michelle.
Lol.. a fat cat.. what are you doing up so early in fl time? I miss east coast nature pics. I hope to get out and about around the st. Marks refuge area this weekend. The rain may prohibit that...
If 0bama had a cat Larry Sinclair would be jealous.
Does your JRT join in the fun?
I don’t sleep on any schedule, mostly a series of naps.
If there was a JRT here we wouldn’t have any furniture left at all.
I wish that was my life. Its a series of pain in the asses..
We should have started hanging politicians right after we invented rope.
Forty pounds at 2 years of age for that cat is unhealthy.
I have seen a bigger lean cat younger that that one though.
About 5 years ago I was taking my black Maine Coon to the vet for shots. Our vet keeps two adoption cages from the local shelter in his waiting room. In one of the cages was the biggest domestic cat I’d ever seen in my life. Cream colored, Maine Coon, fourteen months old, lean and 42 pounds. I’d have adopted it, but the wife said we already have two cats and that’s enough. I didn’t know that they made kitties that big, but the vet said they aren’t common but there are a few around.
“...Adult cats typically weigh between seven and 12 pounds...” Not some breeds! Maine Coons are one of the largest breeds of domestic cat. Males weigh from 15 to 25 lb (6.8 to 11 kg) with females weighing from 10 to 15 lb (4.5 to 6.8 kg).
May be he has a Maine Coon gene in there somewhere? Then again, did someone just stuff him?
Each batch of rope should be tested by hanging a politician. That would bring their numbers down to a manageable size.
Just took my Mimi to the vet (she has chronic asthma). She weighed in at 15.5 pounds, lol.
She is a little tubbie!
Hope they can get him healthy again....that’s sad...
I just have no patience with that, though. How can they NOT know they're killing the animal, unless they're stupid? It's animal abuse, plain and simple. I hate the way people treat obese cats as some kind of joke, or as though they're cute. They're neither. They break my heart.
The article says he’s already lost a couple of pounds. Sounds hopeful to me.
Orson Wells, reincarnated as Kevin Smith’s cat.
He could have untreated thyroid issues, but my money is on too much nom noms.
Check out the second link @17
Pillow Pets - yes!
Similar ‘last one’ story at our daughter’s, but don’t remember now which animal.
Young granddaughters have such dramatic ‘last one’ stories!
This particular g-daughter (9) just won the mile in her division at a huge track meet . . .
(Worked that in pretty good - LOL)!
Well rounded cat, but not well rounded diet.
“She also batted .667.”
Wow - congrats to your daughter!
A couple of happy young ladies!
My kitty weighs 20 lbs and ONLY eats 1/2 cup of IAMS Weight Control Crunchies daily...that’s it.
He’s just a big boy...I can’t pick him up anymore because he’s so round and soft,he is hard to hold onto!
Should have come with a handle on his back-like luggage!
The Mrs-I love my Bibby Boy!
As the owner of the 14 lb Deimos, I salute you.
I’d salute you back, but my Ginormous Bibby is hindering any bodily movement except for my fingers; he is laying across me and my arms and I am peeking over him to see the screen of my laptop...
My laptop is on his enemies list...he’s already beaten it up once!
Ouch...gotta go...Bibby has spoken!
There was a fat cat named Oscar that lived next door when I was a kid. He’d sort of groan when you picked him up. But he wasn’t as big as this Meow fellow. Oh man he’s chubbeh.
