BOSTON (Reuters) - The rural New England states of Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire are the most peaceful U.S. states, a distinction that gives them an economic advantage over the most violent, including Louisiana, Tennessee and Nevada. Violence and its aftermath cost the entire U.S. economy some $460 billion last year, according to the Institute for Economics and Peace's second annual United States Peace Index, which was released on Tuesday.

Vermont and Maine are liberal, but they have a lot of guns. So does New Hampshire. Rural areas with guns.
One of the most important factors in peace and domestic tranquility is the age of the population. Older is more peaceful. I wonder what the average age is of Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire.

imagine that. I wonder how many of those folks have jobs in academia as those three states are filled w/ colleges/universities.
I'm guessing there are times in NE when even the most hardened street thugs get snowed in....
When off duty in Virginia, I used to carry my pistol at all times. I have seen plenty of violent crimes happen first hand while out and about in Virginia and DC, and I intervened in many.
Now that I live in Vermont, I don't carry a pistol anymore. I should, because anything can happen anywhere, but there is a very different vibe up here. It's true that there are robberies of drug stores and other businesses in Vermont (usually some 20-year old white guy trying to get oxycontin or money for meth), but it is nowhere on the scale of say, DC or Northern Virginia. Specifically, one could very well be dragged from their car and beaten in DC or Virginia for "disrespecting" someone or falling victim to road rage. I don't really see it up here.
I'll leave it to the reader to decide why Vermont feels so much safer.
Side note: I still have the Mossberg Persuader ready to go in the house. Sometimes "youths" come up from New York and engage in burglary sprees.
Demographics like that make it oh-so-easy to be liberal. Those New Englanders never have to face the consequences of the stupidity of what liberalism brings.
It reminds me of a line about Indians (feather not dot): "The farther away you're from them, the more noble they are."
Framingham, MA???
I’m not buying that.
“Institute for Economics and Peace’s”
Ho boy..another libtards scam group. I have more credibility in the Bud Light Institute.
During winter, they take advantage of earlier sunset and later sunrise to move about in the darkness for longer periods.
That’s exactly it. In fact, up until recently those percentages were 0.0%.
A couple three years back there was some polital push to place blacks in those states.
The three states are #1,2,and 4 in the “whitest states” category.
Coincidence?
What state is #3?
West Virginia
If I remember hearing/reading something recently, a number of displaced Somalians ended up in Maine. Probably some f**ked up solution, someone from USAID had when trying to figure out where to put them. Can you imagine going from a country that roasts most of the year to a ‘no-bulls**t” winter. They have to be hating the weather, but loving life on the American taxpayer.
these high and mighty elites never face the consequences of their stupidity....
Tragic Martin my foot.....for every one of him, there's a dozen pale victims lying in the dirt.....IMO of course...
I too live in rural VT and believe the fact anybody with a driver’s license can carry concealed leads the miniscule criminal element to think real hard. That, coupled with the fact most rural folks have been hunting since they could walk, makes it dangerous to be a thug.
Same with Oregon....
I love living in Maine!
I’m out in the the country, all the neighbors are great!
Folks in rural towns here are armed, and the trouble makers know it.
Crime is very low.
Winters are tough up here, but the below zero weather
get rid of the riff raff.
You see somebody out in that weather, they’re most likely a friend!
LOL
Portland, Lewiston, and Bangor can be trouble spots.
Lewiston had a huge influx of Somalians awhile back.
It’s a PITA to shop in Portland, lots of pan handlers abound.
Bangor has a huge mosque now.
Lots of libs and airy-fairies living there, too.
Nuts and berries types.
At least where I live, all the nuts are in the trees!
Land around here is bring snapped up by folks who want to get away from dangerous cities.
Some are snotty and keep to themselves, most are pretty nice.
It IS peaceful here!
Northern Maine has remained sparsely populated, winters can be REALLY brutal up there.
It is beautiful country though.
Good place to raise kids.
From what I understand, many of the tribes did have a highly developed sense of honor and personal worth. I would think that this wouldn't seem any less true as you got closer to them, just less significant.
Bingo!
And clinging to their guns and religion too!
I wonder if it ever occurred to the writer that Vermont, Maine, and New Hampshire have high gun ownership and fewer regulations on gun ownership than most other states. So much for the liberal lie that gun ownership leads to violence.
