Teens Getting Drunk on Hand Sanitizer
ABC News ^ | Apr 24, 2012 | Sarah Hoberman

As many as six California teenagers were hospitalized with alcohol poisoning last month, and two last weekend alone, from drinking hand sanitizer.

Coming on the heels of cough medicine, hand sanitizer is the latest in a string of household products used to induce intoxication, and it has public health officials worried, as a few squirts of hand sanitizer could equal a couple of shots of hard liquor.

“This is a rapidly emerging trend,” Dr. Cyrus Rangan, medical toxicology consultant for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, said in a news conference today. About 2,600 cases have been reported in California since 2010, but it’s become a national problem. “It’s not just localized to us,” Helen Arbogast, an injury prevention coordinator in the trauma program at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, told ABC News today. “Since 2009 we can see on YouTube it’s in all regions of the country. We see it in the South, in the Midwest, in the East.” Liquid hand sanitizer is 62 to 65 percent ethyl alcohol, or ethanol, the main ingredient in beer, wine and spirits, making it 120-proof. To compare, a bottle of vodka is 80-proof.

“A few swallows is all it takes to get a person to get the intoxicated effects of alcohol,” Rangan said. Doctors said ingesting hand sanitizer can produce the same side effects as consuming large amounts of alcohol – slurred speech, unresponsiveness, possibly falling into a coma state.

Rangan warned that long-term use could lead to brain, liver and kidney damage.

Teenagers use salt to break up the alcohol from the sanitizer to get a more powerful dose. These distillation instructions can be found on the Internet in tutorial videos that describe in detail how to do it. Other troubling videos have surfaced online showing kids laughing as they purposely ingested sanitizer, many

And of course to “protect” the children, the Government will either ban it, or regulate it which will result in more Staph infections in hospitals and DEATH because kids nowadays are too damn dumb.

Jesus wept.

I am so sick of “kids” who want to be zoned out of life. If they think life is “just too hard” I say we let them just die. They insult every person who is struggling right this minute in a ICU or CCU to live.

Plain or aloe flavored... er, scented?

Well, it’s cheaper than vanilla extract.

Simple answer, drop the all powerful government hammer on sales of Hand Sanitizer. Maybe require an ID and 5 day waiting period before you can take a bottle home...

After all, it’s for the children!

Really? Hand sanitizer? Kids just don’t read nowadays, it is so easy to make wine from grape concentrate and other common ingredients available at the grocery. We made a particularly wicked batch of jungle juice once from Hawaiian Punch concentrate before we were old enough to buy booze. I am not encouraging teen substance abuse, but just wondering how stupid are these kids? I did know a huffer but I think he is in prison nowadays, dumb as a kid dumb as an adult.

Hand sanitizers include wood alcohol or methanol, which destroys the liver with a few swigs. Government greed for tax revenue has certainly led to a lot of unnecessary deaths - I don’t understand what possessed the citizenry to agree to the government’s requirement that products that contain grain alcohol be deliberately poisoned with wood alcohol. I can understand the existence of this wicked law in Nazi Germany or the Soviet Union, but here in the land of the free and the home of the brave?

If they are that stupid. Then let them die, and decrease the surplus population.

Do they still sell “Two Buck Chuck” in California?

In my day the kids would give money to the local convenience store wino.

One bottle for him, one bottle for us.

We got high, puked in my parent’s back yard, but nobody went to the hospital.

Trader Joe's still has it.

In my day, it was Boones Farm, Bartles and James Wine Cooler or if you were in a rush for a rush, Old English 800.

Just assign us all minders and get it over with.

If we were simply shadowed 24/7 by Personal Life Organizers to make sure we were all eating, exercising, driving and thinking correctly, good would be common. And we all want that. For the common good.
