All I know is that the Mittlickers better hope Goode can help get people to the polls because if they’re counting on Mitt to carry the downticket GOP races, the GOP is screwed.
I will note that some people who are backing Goode now are the same people who attacked Rick Perry for being a Democrat in the 1980s, up to when he supported Al Gore for the 2008 democratic primary.
Virgil Goode was a democrat until the year 2000, serving 2 terms in congress as a democrat before serving a term as an independent. He became a republican in 2002, after working to ensure that Boucher, another democrat, was guaranteed not to be redistricted out of a seat in the house.
I don’t say this to oppose him — he has in this decade been a stalwart conservative, and his loss in 2008 was a true shame. I just like to point out how the best conservative we had to beat Romney this time around was dismissed for positions that were later completely acceptable in the final guys in the race, and in Goode now.
Unfortunately, about the only impact Goode could possibly have in this election is to drain off just enough republican votes in Virginia to give Obama the state. But I don’t expect it to happen, since there’s probably a reason he didn’t even try to run again for his seat in 2010, even though he only lost it by a couple hundred votes. We still took the seat back, but with a candidate not as conservative as Goode.
A no-name candidate with no money and no constituency, I doubt he will even be a blip on the radar for this election. Still a good guy, and I wish he had focused on things he could win here in Virginia, like the Senate seat.

You make a good point about that, but in the end it was Perry's inability to communicate effectively enough at a national level that did the most damage to him. I supported Perry and tried to stick with him as long as possible. Perry has an almost perfect resume and on paper was clearly the best candidate, but I think we have to be fair and admit that his own poor debate and communication skills are probably what ultimately did him in.
I would add another factor that many people don't like hearing. Palin. I really believe that, at least on forums such as this one, large numbers of devoted Palin supporters were so convinced she was running that they thought they were helping clear the way for her by working to undermine any serious threat to her candidacy. For quite awhile, Perry was perceived as, potentially, one of her main conservative rivals. I think Palin's waiting till so late in the game to declare she wasn't running ended up hurting all the conservative candidates to some degree. It simply made it harder for conservative primary voters to focus on the actual candidates because so many were pining for the one that wasn't going to run. I believe this was far more damaging than most people think.
A no-name candidate with no money and no constituency, I doubt he will even be a blip on the radar for this election. Still a good guy, and I wish he had focused on things he could win here in Virginia, like the Senate seat.
As I'm from Virginia I know who Goode is. While he may be a good guy, he is not a very significant political figure statewide and is unlikely to have any impact even here in the Commonwealth. Like you said, "a no-name candidate with no money and no constituency" isn't likely to be so much as a blip on the radar.
No, they weren't, and quite frankly I get weary of rebutting this. His back surgery was what did him in. The early debates were horrific, and with each one, I would be on the edge of my seat, nervous, wondering when the screwup would come. But by the time he healed, toward the end, his performances were excellent, and I was completely relaxed because I knew he'd do a great job. Rick Perry does not have poor debate skills, and he most certainly doesn't have poor communication skills.
Well, I hope you are right. I really do. I am willing to believe the back surgery and medication caused him problems, but even near the end of his run I didn't find Perry's communication ability terribly effective. He struck me as especially strong at small group fundraisers and the like, and rather poor when he had to speak off the cuff to the media and even in the last few debates he participated in. Yes, he got better in the final debates, but I still felt he did not do as well in those as even Santorum and Gingrich did. In the end I concluded Perry was basically a paper tiger on a national level - great resume, but just lacking the core communications skills needed.
But if you are right about this then we will likely see Perry running again in 2016 or 2020. I am not from Texas or anywhere near it, so I don't really know Perry as much as perhaps you do. His resume is only getting stronger as it seems to me he is becoming more and more conservative as time passes. I'd be thrilled to support him again if the communication issues are resolved.
You need more adjectives. If you add in more adjectives, you will convert more people from the GOP.

Last I heard, Perry isn't ruling out running for national office again. So I guess we shall see. I think he learned some important lessons this time around which could possibly be put to good use next time.
